Discipline is as important to a puppy as it is to a child. Puppies behave just like children and we need to teach them education so that they learn to distinguish what is good from what is wrong, and develop a bond and a happy relationship with us. So here's how to teach a puppy discipline.
Steps
Step 1. Stick to limits and consequences
If you give the dog what he wants and reward him even when he misbehaves, you will get a spoiled and intemperate puppy who does the exact opposite of what he should, only causing chaos.
Step 2. Make it clear to the puppy that this type of behavior is not tolerated
Correct it firmly every time it fails. Say firmly No! when it bites into something it shouldn't touch. Never be afraid to correct him if he does something wrong.
Step 3. Discipline with love
Teach the dog but always do it with love.
Never, ever treat it like garbage and like it's unwanted. Remember: you have to correct the behavior not the dog.
Step 4. Be clear, firm and consistent
DON'T raise your voice and don't scream but be as firm as possible. Shouting and raising your voice with the puppy will frustrate the bond between you.
Step 5. No more leftovers at the dinner table
Feeding them while you are at the table is a bad habit for dogs and puppies. If the puppy begs or jumps into your arms while you eat, ignore it and order it decisively: Down! if it jumps on your lap. The dog / puppy must learn that if he is hungry, he has his own food. Show him where his baby food is. [Eating under your table can make the puppy spoiled, which would lead him to ask for even more. Here's another reason why you shouldn't give him under the counter sop.]
Step 6. If your dog does something wrong DO NOT reward him
Are you spoiling him too much? Well, it's time to stop. Too many rewards spoil the dog and are unhealthy. Make it clear to him that by misbehaving he will achieve nothing. If he is good and respects others, you should reward him and be proud of him.
Step 7. Like small children, dogs also need timeouts
A closed place is fine. Or if you can, put the puppy in the crate and leave it there for 5 minutes. If your puppy whines and cries, ignore it. He must learn that everything he does leads to consequences. Pay no attention to him during his timeout.
Advice
- Maintain eye contact as you educate him. Don't smile. He hints at a slight frown so that the puppy understands that you are not happy and that what he has done is not good.
- If the puppy bites your hand or sticks to your clothes, take it by the lower part of the jaw but do not squeeze it because you would hurt it and say no to it in a firm voice. By doing this, the dog will understand that every time he does something wrong, his jaw will be blocked.
- Spank the puppy gently but firmly. However softly, give him a pat on the butt. Try not to hurt him. However, you must be firm: it will not be a punishment but an excellent learning resource for him. He will teach the puppy that this behavior is not acceptable and will not do him any good. Use a rolled up newspaper or soft book.
