Baptism is a special moment in the life of parents, children and guests at the ceremony. As this is an important event, you need to dress appropriately for the occasion. Method 1 of 3: Women's Clothing
Step 1. Dress for the occasion
Baptisms call for more elegant attire than everyday wear. You should choose a nice dress, skirt or formal pants. You can buy new clothes or use clothes that you already have in the closet. As for the degree of formality, you should be more elegant than when you go to a picnic, but less formal than when you go to a wedding. Some outfit ideas include:
- A dress with shrug or a light sweater.
- Skirt and blouse, but they shouldn't be too provocative.
- Trousers of a business suit and a shirt (formal, but with a casual touch).
Step 2. Wear light colors if you like
Unlike weddings, baptisms have no rules as to what colors you can and can't wear (it's somewhat unlikely to dress like the baby, unless you decide to dress in white from head to toe). Since it is a cheerful occasion, you can wear light colors and special patterns.
Step 3. Avoid unsuitable clothing

Avoid completely uncovering the shoulders and above all avoid plunging necklines. Churches can be cold, especially in winter. If you choose a nice jacket or an elegant sweater, you can enrich your outfit and stay warm.

Stiletto heels are not suitable for a christening. Choose medium heels instead, so that you can walk in them and be comfortable. Shoes should also be good for the weather - if it snows, avoid wearing sandals.

Step 1. Dress well
Choose a sporty jacket or a suit jacket that is beautiful and comfortable. Some baptisms can be informal, but if you're not sure what the ceremony will look like, choose a suit jacket and pants. If you don't want to wear a jacket, opt for a shirt with a tie and elegant trousers.
Step 2. Choose a nice tie
Baptisms are happy occasions and the tie must reflect this atmosphere. This does not mean choosing one with cartoon characters: rather prefer a light tie, with a particular pattern. Make sure it matches your outfit.
Step 3. Wear elegant shoes
Shoes are an important element of an outfit, especially when wearing a suit. Avoid wearing sneakers and opt for a pair of elegant shoes. Before baptism, polish them well.
Step 4. Bring some spare clothes with you for refreshments
If you go to a reception or party after baptism and don't want to wear the suit because you find it uncomfortable, bring a nice and comfortable change of clothes. For example, you could combine a polo shirt with a pair of well-pressed trousers.
Method 3 of 3: Children's Clothing
Step 1. Children must wear suitable clothes for the church
Maybe they'll stick to a t-shirt they use every day, but you have to choose something nice. For girls, light or floral dresses are perfect. Children can wear more formal pants and a round neck T-shirt. Here are other ideas:
- Girls: a dress and a shirt; skirt and blouse; pants, blouse and shirt.
- Children: pants and shirt; velvet and knitted trousers; elegant trousers and a polo shirt.
Step 2. Think about convenience
It is important that the clothes are elegant, but remember that the children must be comfortable for the ceremony. When choosing their garments, like the ones suggested here, make sure they are comfortable and the right size. If possible, let them choose their clothes - that way they will be happier, because they will wear whatever they like.
Little girls can avoid wearing pantyhose: baptism is not too formal and it is not necessary to force them to wear tight socks, unless the church or family requires it
Step 3. Choose comfortable shoes
Uncomfortable and overly sophisticated shoes aren't necessary, but it's up to you. If you want your kids to wear elegant shoes, bring a change for refreshments so they can put on more comfortable footwear.
