A move can be exciting and stressful. While it offers you the opportunity to change and reinvent yourself, it also presents a whole list of things to do and details on how to prepare your packages. It may seem easy to put your clothes in your luggage and that you will only need a few suitcases and bags, but you might want to organize yourself a little better. The clothes are heavy and it is important to transport them in a safe way, so that they do not get damaged and do not absorb moisture when moving from the old house to the new one. Prepare the items of clothing you will take with you by planning on time and using the right tools.
Steps
Step 1. Throw away what you don't need
There is no point in packing and carrying clothes you no longer wear.
- Give clothes that are still in good condition but no longer fit or are not suitable for the climate of the place you are moving to charity.
- Throw away clothes that are worn, stained or too old to be placed in public.
Step 2. Set aside the clothes you will need right away
You probably won't completely unpack your bags the first day you live in your new home, so set up a duffel bag into which you will fit the clothing you will use on arrival.
Remember to leave out the clothing you will be wearing on the day of the transfer and to include underwear and socks
Step 3. Break them down by season
First, pack any clothes you aren't using this season. You won't need it right away, and you can label boxes or suitcases indicating that they don't need to be emptied urgently.
Step 4. Use the suitcases at the beginning
The best way to tidy up your clothes is to pack them as if you were leaving for a trip.
- Fold clothes and put them in suitcases. Use envelopes so that everything is in order, firmly in place and protected.
- Put the most delicate items in the suitcases, while the more resistant items, such as shorts and sweaters, can be placed in the boxes.
Step 5. Invest in clothing removal boxes
These are tall containers that have a metal bar at the top, so you can hang your clothes. They are ideal for suits, dresses and other items you don't want to fold.
These containers are available from moving companies. Get all the ones you need, and that you can afford. The cost of each box is around 30 euros, but it depends on the size
Step 6. Use classic cardboard boxes for extra clothing that won't fit in suitcases or garment bins
Fold the t-shirts, tracksuits, sweaters and sweatshirts and stack them in the boxes.
- Lift the boxes as you fill them. They can get heavy in the blink of an eye. If you have to carry them, you don't want to be complicated to lift and carry them.
- Close the boxes with packing tape and write what they contain; examples: “Giovanni's summer dresses” or “Alice's sweaters”.
Step 7. Shoes should be separated from clothes so they won't get dirty
- Use the shoe boxes you have stored. You can stack them in a larger container to transport them.
- Fill the shoes with socks or paper to make sure they hold their shape and won't break if you haven't packed them.
Step 8. Transport the clothes unpacked if you are going to make a quick transfer
For example, if you are moving to a house that is not far from the one you live in now, you can place your clothes (still hanging on the hangers) on the back seat of the car.
Advice
- Remember to pack the accessories in a separate package. You don't want them to get lost in your clothes or to snag your clothes and tear them off.
- You could use vacuum bags for clothes. They are available in hypermarkets and online. Garments may crease, so be prepared to iron them if you choose this method. They are available in different sizes.
