While cooking, it can happen that you lose track of time, forget to turn off the oven or choose the wrong temperature; as a result, the food burns and the smell spreads throughout the house. Fortunately, you can get rid of it quite easily by using some common household items. You can clean the surfaces in your home where the burning smell has set, prepare some solutions that absorb the stench, and make room fresheners yourself.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Clean the Area
Step 1. Remove all burnt food
Once it has cooled completely, throw it away. Take all the burnt food, put it in a plastic bag and throw it in the bin outside the house. You have to take it outside, do not leave it in the garbage pail or basket you keep in the kitchen, otherwise the smell will remain in the air.
Step 2. Open the windows
Let out the smell of burning and let in fresh air; this is the simplest and fastest way to circulate the air in the house. Open all windows and doors to the outside, especially those near the kitchen.
Step 3. Turn on the fans
To circulate the air even faster, turn on all the electric fans in the house and direct the air towards the open windows and doors; set them to the maximum speed possible to increase the air movement. If you have a hood / fan over the stove in the kitchen, turn that on too.
Step 4. Clean all surfaces
Wash especially those in rooms where you can smell the burning. Use bleach or disinfectant to treat surfaces and floors; if the smell is particularly strong, wash the walls as well.
Step 5. Wash or discard any items that have absorbed the odor
Put all the fabric items in the rooms where the smell has soaked into the washing machine. These include non-slip tablecloths, curtains, and covers; use bleach on those materials that do not get damaged. If the smell has gotten into the cardboard boxes you keep in the kitchen, transfer the contents to plastic bags and recycle the boxes.
Method 2 of 3: Absorb Odors
Step 1. Make a lemon water solution
Boil a pot of water on the stove, cut a lemon into several slices and put them in boiling water; leave them for 10-30 minutes to freshen the air in the house.
Alternatively, you can steep a handful of cloves instead of lemon wedges
Step 2. Place a bowl of water and onion on the kitchen counter
Cut the vegetable, put the slices in a container with water and place it in the center of the kitchen; if the whole house has been infested with the smell of burning, you can arrange more bowls in the various rooms. Let the water absorb the odors throughout the night.
Step 3. Soak the bread in vinegar
These ingredients can absorb odors; just fill a saucepan with water, 500 ml of vinegar and bring the solution to a boil. Simmer the liquid for 15 minutes, take some bread, dip it and put it in a saucer to get rid of the stench of burning.
You can also just throw cups of vinegar around the house and get the same effect, but hot liquid is more effective
Step 4. Mix the water with the baking soda
This substance has a high absorption power against odors, especially those of cooking. To get rid of the stench of burning, pour about 100 g of baking soda into two cups and place them in the rooms where the smell has nested.
Method 3 of 3: Hide the Smell
Step 1. Create a nice baked goods smell
Preheat the appliance to 90 ° C, place aluminum foil on a cookie sheet and sprinkle it with sugar, cinnamon and a spoonful of butter. Turn off the oven and leave the pan inside for 2-4 hours; in this way, the kitchen is filled with a good smell, as if you have just cooked something delicious.
Step 2. Sprinkle some lemon water
Pour equal parts citrus juice and water into a spray bottle. Spread the solution around the house as needed; in this way, you absorb the stench and at the same time leave a natural scent without chemical notes.
Step 3. Make an air freshener with essential oils
Mix 180ml of water with 30ml of vodka, denatured alcohol or natural vanilla extract and 15-20 drops of a pleasant combination of essential oils. Pour everything into a 250ml spray bottle, shake it and spread the mixture as needed.
Step 4. Use sprays
If you tolerate them, spray some commercial deodorants like Febreze or Glade; they are able to mask odors better than home remedies.
