Getting close to a famous person can be a difficult experience, but asking for an autograph can be even more exhausting. But it's not that bad - read on!
Steps
Step 1. Understand that famous people are used to fans asking for autographs
They handle this experience smoothly, so don't be too nervous.
Step 2. Remember that celebrities are people like us; they too have private lives and responsibilities
Make sure it's a good time to ask for an autograph. Fans are always appreciated but remember that no one wants to be caught off guard on the toilet or with their mouth full at a business dinner.
Step 3. Get closer to the famous person
Don't go to the point of annoying them with your proximity. Just say hello, tell him your name, and give him a cute compliment. Don't get too excited, he won't like it. Ask a question or two and comment on the latest movie, video, book, or why it's famous.
Step 4. Ask for an autograph by saying:
"I would love to have your autograph" or "Can we take a picture together?". Don't be shy but confident.
Step 5. Stay calm
Hand out a pen and a piece of paper but don't force objects into his hand.
Step 6. Be organized and collaborative
Keep the piece of paper still and have a pen handy when you are approaching.
Step 7. If you are under 12 or look young and very shy and embarrassed, the character will approach you
The only thing to do is to behave tenderly!
Advice
- Wear something he will remember, so if he meets you again he might say "I remember you because (and so on)".
- It is not recommended to have a dress or shirt signed. Markers and pens fade after a couple of washes and even permanent ones don't last forever on a fabric!
- If for any reason you feel more comfortable asking for an autograph to give to a friend or child, do so and you will be able to not be too nervous.
- Also, if you follow this last step, you could have your brother / sister / girlfriend / son dedicate the autograph while saying your name at the same time.
- If you can't dare to ask for an autograph, you could always try to buy it at an online auction or collectibles convention.
Warnings
- Never ask when the character is out for dinner or spending time with family.
- NEVER scream. You will scare him and he probably won't sign you and take no pictures.
- When you ask, avoid talking, talking, talking. Make your request, give him a compliment or two, and then walk away.
- Don't be angry if he refuses. It may not be the right time to sign autographs or take photos. It is very irritating to see a fan exaggerate and you may be turned away from the area by security.
- Give him a quick, non-excessive hug and don't be too shy. They are people like everyone.
- One thing only! Famous people will surely think that you will resell the autograph on eBay.
