Warhammer 40,000 is a board game played with miniatures. In addition to having a particularly rich basic setting, explained in the various Codexes of the armies, it has a rather complicated system of rules. Here are some helpful steps to get you started playing Warhammer 40,000 in a simplified way.

Step 1. Choose the army you want to play with

You can choose from a dozen armies, each with their own history, strengths and weaknesses. You can purchase the Army, Codex and Game Rules from the Games Workshop publishing house (check their website for more information).

Step 2. Mount the miniatures and paint them

When buying an army it is necessary to glue and paint the individual pieces that make up the miniatures.

Step 3. It is played with two or more players, each of whom uses an army

Players must agree on the total amount of points that can be spent to build their army. Each unit has a point value, and the fact that there is a total score to be spent to build each army serves to make the game as balanced as possible. When all players have chosen their army members, the game can begin.

There are a lot of different game modes in Warhammer 40,000. Each mode has particular rules and objectives, but most games are played with dice and a tape measure

Step 5. Players take turns

The aim is to inflict as much damage as possible on opposing armies while minimizing those suffered by your own. On your turn you can move, attack from a distance and go to the assault.

  • With the movement action you can move your miniatures (always following what is written in the game rules and in the Codex of your army). Usually, the pieces can be moved by 6 inches, so use a tape measure to be accurate.
  • In the phase of the game in which it is possible to attack from a distance, roll a die to determine the number of hits suffered by the opposing army, then roll another die to determine how many of these cause wounds. At this point, the opposing player rolls a die to determine how many hits have been absorbed by their fighters' armor. Those that failed to absorb the blows are removed from the battlefield.
  • The assault phase consists of a charge against the enemy army and is resolved in hand-to-hand combat. Specify which unit of your army is attacking and which unit is the target. Hand-to-hand combat is very similar to ranged combat. Roll a dice to determine how many hits are hit, how many have caused wounds, and how many are absorbed. The only difference is that the opponent can respond to the attack, rolling the dice to determine how many of your fighters have been hit, wounded and how many have absorbed the blow.

Step 6. During the turn, move the figures, attack from a distance and close combat

The number of rounds that make up the game can be agreed at the beginning, but generally each player plays 6 rounds.
