If you like mechanics, this project might be perfect for you. This article will tell you how to build a model of a bridge using just toothpicks.
Steps
Step 1. Decide what kind of bridge you are going to build:
- Warren Bridge
- Pratt Bridge
- Howe Bridge
- Arch bridge
- Or design your own bridge. Use the principles referred to in certain bridge building guides to make sure you have the right proportions.
Step 2. Design your bridge (to scale) on a piece of squared paper
This way you will force yourself to calculate the right measurements already and avoid complications going forward with the project.
Step 3. Grab your toothpicks and start building your bridge
Follow the project. Cut the toothpicks so they are the right size.
Step 4. Tie the toothpicks together with string
This is the simplest way to join them. You can also use wood glue on the more difficult parts.
Step 5. Test your bridge
Make sure it holds up. If not, untie the toothpicks and start over.
Step 6. Finished
Advice
- If you use glue, be careful not to use too much - or too little. If you feel like you're doing more damage than anything else, take a break and try again tomorrow!
- To build an efficient foundation for your deck, design a surface that is capable of holding minimal weight and plan for more support in this area.
- Never use white glue, use hot glue or thicker glue; white glue is not enough to glue wood.
- You can cut the sharp end of the toothpick with scissors or a utility knife.
