In Minecraft you can grow various plants for use as food, for distilling drinks, as decorations and dyes. This article explains how to plant the different seeds in the game.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Plant the Wheat
Step 1. Break the tall grass
You can do this with your hands or with a sword and sometimes you will get seeds. To break the grass, simply click on it or pull the controller's right trigger.
Step 2. Collect the seeds
When you see them appear on the ground, walk over them to automatically add them to your inventory.
Step 3. Build a hoe
You can do this using the workbench. Get two sticks and two blocks or ingots of the material of your choice, select them or place them in the creation grid in the following arrangement:
- Put a stick in the center box and the one directly below. You can get sticks from wooden planks, which are made from wooden blocks.
- Place a wooden plank, stone block, iron ingot, or diamond in the middle square of the top row and in the upper left corner.
- Drag the hoe into the inventory.
Step 4. Plow the soil
Equip the hoe and use it on dirt or grass to plow the soil.
To equip the hoe, open your inventory and place it in the toolbar. Press on the keyboard the number corresponding to the box of the bar that contains the hoe, or press the back buttons of the controller to move between the boxes. Point your cursor at a block of grass or dirt and right-click, or press the controller's left trigger to plow the land
Step 5. Plant the seeds
To start, equip them as you did for the hoe. Then point the cursor over the plowed land blocks and right-click or press the left button on the controller to plant the seeds.
Step 6. Wait
The seeds will grow into wheat plants. You can collect them by clicking the left mouse button when they turn yellow.
Make sure that the cultivated blocks are located adjacent to a water source, so that the plants grow faster
Method 2 of 4: Planting Carrots and Potatoes
Step 1. Get the carrots and potatoes
You can find these vegetables in the gardens of the villages. When fully ripe, click on them or pull the controller's right trigger to pick them up with your hands or a sword. All blocks with a carrot produce more carrots as a crop. Walk on them to collect them.
- Carrots can also be found by killing zombies, in sunken ship chests and pillager outposts.
- Don't eat them! You will not be able to plant the carrots you have consumed.
Step 2. Build a hoe

- Put a stick in the center box and the one directly below. You can get sticks from wooden planks, which are made from wooden blocks.
- Place a wooden plank, stone block, iron ingot, or diamond in the middle square of the top row and in the upper left corner.
- Drag the hoe into the inventory.

Press on the keyboard the number corresponding to the box of the bar that contains the hoe, or press the back buttons of the controller to move between the boxes. Point your cursor at a block of grass or dirt and right-click, or press the controller's left trigger to plow the land
Step 4. Plant the carrots in the plowed soil
To do this, place them in the bar and select them as for the hoe. Point your cursor at a plowed block and right-click or press the controller's left trigger. Each carrot you plant will produce more.
Step 5. Wait
You can pick carrots when you see the orange part sticking out of the ground. Potatoes are ripe when you notice their classic brown color.
Make sure that the cultivated blocks are located adjacent to a water source, so that the plants grow faster
Method 3 of 4: Planting Melons and Pumpkins
Step 1. Get melon and pumpkin seeds
You can find melons in the jungle and in the villages of the savannah. Pumpkins, on the other hand, appear in all biomes with blocks of grass that do not produce plants. You can also find them in the "stalk cultivation" rooms of the forest mansions. To get the seeds of these plants, collect them with your hands or sword.
Step 2. Build a hoe
You can do this using the workbench. Get two sticks and two blocks or ingots of the material of your choice, select them or place them in the creation grid in the following arrangement:
- Put a stick in the center box and the one directly below. You can get sticks from wooden planks, which are made from wooden blocks.

Point your cursor at a block of grass or dirt and right-click, or press the controller's left trigger to plow the land
Step 4. Plant the melons or pumpkins
Equip seeds by opening your inventory and placing them in the toolbar. Select the box you placed them in, then point your cursor over a block of plowed land and right-click, or press the controller's left trigger to plant them.
Step 5. Wait
Melons and pumpkins are ripe when a melon or pumpkin shaped block appears next to the plant.
Method 4 of 4: Grow other Plants
Step 1. Plant the saplings
You can find them by breaking the leaves of the trees. Plant them in blocks of dirt or grass.
Step 2. Plant the sugar cane
You can find this plant in nature, near rivers. You can grow it next to water.
Step 3. Plant the cocoa beans
You can find them on jungle trees and plant them on jungle wood.
Step 4. Plant the vines
You can find them on jungle trees and plant them everywhere. Pick them up with shears.
Step 5. Plant the cacti
You can find them in the desert and plant them on sand blocks. Collect them carefully - ouch!
Step 6. Plant the mushrooms
You can find them in swamps, in the taiga of giant trees and in dark places, such as caves. You can plant them in dark areas where the lighting level is below 13. If grown on mycelium or podzol blocks, they will grow even if the light is brighter.
Step 7. Plant Nether Warts
You can find them in Nether fortresses and plant them in the sand of souls.
Step 8. Plant the flowers
You can find them in nature on grass blocks and plant them on grass. You can only transfer a flower from one block to another.
If you have bone meal, you can right-click on the ground and, if you're lucky, a flower will appear
Advice
- Almost all plants can be grown. Many can also be found and collected in nature.
- Some plants change color based on the biome in which they are grown.
- Bone meal can instantly grow many plants. You can get it by placing a bone in the crafting grid and applying it by clicking the right mouse button. From version 1.7.0 and above, bone meal can no longer grow plants instantly (you will need to use 3-4 units of flour).
- You can plant some plants in the flower pots and use them as decorations. To do this you will need to build the flowerpot. You can plant saplings, mushrooms, flowers, cacti, ferns and dead bushes this way.
