The wiper blades are made of rubber, so they naturally deteriorate after several months of use, during which time they have removed snow, rain and dust from the windshield. You can take the car to the mechanic to have it replaced, but know that this is a simple job that you can do too. The assembly process is practically identical for the vast majority of machines in circulation.

Part 1 of 3: Preparing for the Replacement
Step 1. Learn which part to change
The wipers are composed of three basic elements: the lower arm that extends from the base of the windshield, the metal or plastic brush connected to the arm and finally the actual rubber strip that cleans the windshield. When you need to change the brushes you actually only replace the rubber strip that has deteriorated with water and weather.
Step 2. Measure the length of the rubber brush you need to purchase
To find the size you need, take the length of the old one using a tape measure or ruler. Write down the exact value and then go to the auto parts shop with this information.
- Do not assume that the right wiper blade is as long as that of the left. Often one is 3-5 cm shorter than the other.
- Wiper blades typically cost an average of € 13.00 each, but you'll save labor costs if you replace them yourself.
Part 2 of 3: Install the New Wiper Blades
Step 1. Lift the metal arm off the windshield
You should be able to lock it perpendicular to the glass. Be careful at this stage, as the arm is connected with a spring and could suddenly snap against the windshield and break it.
Step 2. Unclip the old rubber brush
Look for the point where this connects to the metal arm. There should be a small plastic block holding the blade in place. Press the latch and release the old brush from the metal arm.
- Some models have small pins rather than a hook to hold the brush in place.
- Make sure to hold the wiper away from the windshield with one hand during the entire procedure.
- You can also protect the glass with a folded towel, as extra safety, in case the arm clicks back towards the crystal while you replace the brush.
Step 3. Insert the new brush
Slide the replacement part into the same end you pulled the old brush from. Rotate it gently until it snaps into place securely. Finally, lean the windshield wiper against the windshield.
Step 4. Repeat the same procedure with the other wiper
You will have to perform the same operations; just make sure you use the appropriate size replacement parts for each side.
Part 3 of 3: When to Change the Wiper Blades
Step 1. Examine the rubber parts for cracks
Old wiper blades become hard and cracked over time, especially in regions with a hot, dry climate. If those in your car have also lost their rubbery texture and grip, then it's time to change them.
Step 2. Pay attention to the next time it rains
If the wipers leave streaks of water on the windshield, through which it is difficult to see as much as through raindrops, then the wipers are likely to have lost traction.
