Is Psalm 23 one of your favorite Psalms? Well, below you will find a commentary, sentence by sentence. With these words you can take courage, or give courage to others, and verify the goodness of these comments, thus respecting God and His plan for each of us.
Steps
Step 1. Read and study Psalm 23, and be aware of God's peaceful voice:
- The Lord is my shepherd: I lack nothing.
- On grassy pastures he makes me rest, he leads me to still waters.
- It reassures me, guides me on the right path, for the sake of His name.
- If I were to walk in a dark valley, I would not fear any harm, because You are with me. Your stick and Your staff give me security.
- Before me You prepare a table under the eyes of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil. My cup overflows.
-
Happiness and grace will be my companions all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord for very long years.
Step 2. Analyze each sentence
Consider each line.
Step 3. Think about the implications this has for you and those around you, and the influence it can have on your life, whether you are on top of a mountain or in a dark valley
For each sentence, here is a brief explanation:
- "The Lord is my shepherd": this means that there is a personal, individual relationship. And you are not just one number in a multitude!
- "I lack nothing": this is the source you can refer to for all your needs - your shepherd shows you the way, the truth and the way of life!
- "On grassy pastures he makes me rest": here is a splendid satisfaction, a great moment of rest!
- "He leads me to still waters": this is a cool and peaceful refreshment for you!
- "It reassures me": this is how you can revitalize yourself and how you can heal!
- "Guide me on the right path": here is your guide in following God's will!
- "For his name's sake": this is what gives us a higher purpose for life!
- "If you were to walk in a dark valley": it is a test for you, such as passing right into a dark valley or being close to death!
- "I would not fear any harm": this means that you are protected even in your worst moment!
- "Because You are with me": this is the constant faith in the shepherd!
- "Your staff and your staff give me security": it is God's protection against enemies!
- "You prepare a table in front of me under the eyes of my enemies": this is a guarantee of support and hope even in times of danger!
- "Sprinkle my head with oil": this means care, dedication and consecration!
- "My cup overflows": this means that His abundance is transmitted to you and to those who believe in him!
- "Happiness and grace will be my companions all the days of my life": this is the blessing and the power of grace, obtained through faith and remembering that "God is love", and that these are not just words!
- "And I will live in the house of the Lord": this is the "home" and the security provided by the Lord!
- "For very long years": for now and for eternity!
Step 4. Decide what is most valuable to you:
- Is it simply "what do you care" in your life?
- Or is it more: "who do you care" in your life?
Step 5. Be available to God's will to let you walk with Him through biblical concepts
Step 6. Seek God, if you can, when you can find Him
Which means you can find Him even when you're in trouble, but better yet, look for Him first.
Step 7. Seek the wisdom of the scriptures and knowledge that does not ridicule faith - and in addition to that, for all important matters, always listen to your best judgment (not your angry, not serious, or reckless side); believe in Jesus, He will never leave you, but He will give you His comfort and lead you by the Holy Spirit
Advice
- If the Lord is your shepherd, His way will surely connect with your life. If you ask for help, this contact could occur as an "intervention": be prepared for possible "interference" in your plans, whether or not this is in His immediate will. Are you really that open to this kind of new life (to follow… the pastor)?
-
"Be afraid (that is, respect and honor) of him, in all your ways, and in the beauty of holiness". (Psalm 96: 8, 9.) This scripture can make Psalm 23 more real to you.
-
What is enough? "He said to me: 'My grace is enough for you, because my power proves perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more willingly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may be extended to me". [This boasting is similar to saying, "I am weak, but he strengthens me!"] (2 Corinthians 12: 9) to be with Him and with His strength.
All the compliments and praise can be attributed to Him: "Yes, through the power of God, and His grace, I can do whatever I have to do."
Warnings
-
Remember: the Lord's grace is enough - as long as you follow God and glorify Him in your life.
It is possible that a person will seek Christ and be reborn and thus become a follower of Jesus Christ
-
Do not ask the Lord Jesus to guide your steps if you are not willing to move your feet, your mind and be active, following His example.
Jesus told His disciples to come and "follow" him now. "Do you not say that there are still four months and then the harvest is coming? Behold, I say to you: Lift up your eyes and look at the fields as they are already white to harvest" (John 4:35). However, realize right now that people are different, just as there are different parts of the body - some are strong, others are struggling with the weakness they want to overcome; you can help someone, but realize that there are people who are not trustworthy such as freeloaders, liars and deranged behaviors, and that such people can be dangerous for you and yours
