Raising and breeding animals is a hobby for many people. Having lizards reproduce can be very interesting. It's not like raising classic pets, but it's complex, fun and exciting. One of the many reasons many people love these unique animals is their affectionate temperament. These reptiles are also very popular due to their small size.
Steps
Step 1. First, you need two bearded dragon (pogona vitticeps), a male and a female
Step 2. You have to keep them in separate cages
Cages must be at least 120cm long or larger.
Step 3. Get the animals to meet and let them get used to each other's presence; check that they do not engage in aggressive behavior
Step 4. Let the male approach the female; leave them together until they have mated
Step 5. Return the male to his cage
The female must hatch the eggs for a month. Make sure she has plenty of sand to dig and possibly a hidden place to lay her eggs. See if she has any bumps on her abdomen.
Step 6. After the female has laid her eggs, gently pick them up with a spoon
Discard eggs that are yellow or too hollow. Bruised eggs are healthy eggs: they are fertile. A female bearded dragon can lay 10-35 eggs anywhere.
Step 7. Place the eggs in an incubator at 28-31 ° C with a humidity of approximately 50%
You can use vermiculite as a substrate for the eggs. Sand is not good, because it can compress the eggs too much. The sex of the unborn child CANNOT be determined by temperature, as is the case with the leopard gecko.
Step 8. The eggs will hatch after 60-80 days
Most of the babies will survive; however, some may not make it and some eggs may not be fertile.
Advice
- Watch out for dragons during mating - the male can get very aggressive.
- Make sure you have everything you need to take care of the eggs and the unborn babies (incubator, food, etc.)
- If you put the male with the young, he could consider them prey and eat them.
- You do NOT have to breed animals if you have not informed as much as possible about how much space they need, etc. You must have a dedicated terrarium for the little ones.
- Females can be aggressive to each other.
- Have bearded dragons tested for faeces before breeding! Send the feces to a qualified veterinarian in your area.
- The number of eggs laid depends on various factors, including age and previous matings. A bearded dragon female can lay anywhere from 15 to 35 eggs.
