Everyone has hair on their arms, but in some people it is thicker and darker. If yours are particularly noticeable, you will probably want to take them off for cosmetic reasons. Fortunately, there are several ways to safely remove them or make them less noticeable. If you are looking to improve your self-esteem or just want to change your look, you can take control of your appearance and find different ways to get rid of arm hair.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Home Treatments
Step 1. Shave the hair
You can shave your arms with a safety razor, as well as any other part of the body. This is a temporary solution and the hairs will grow back within a few days. If you want to continue with this method, you will need to shave your arms a couple of times a week.
Since you are using a blunt razor, this method may result in a lot of ingrown hairs that may also look darker and thicker. Take these factors into consideration if you choose to shave
Step 2. Shorten them
The hair on the arms adheres to the skin and stays flat, so when you cut it it is much less noticeable. Use a regular electric hair clipper and adjust the length of the blade. Don't shave them completely; when they are shorter they will look much thinner.
Step 3. Use a depilatory cream
It allows you to dissolve the hair at the base, which means that the arms will be smooth for about a week. In addition, the hair will tend to grow finer than what happens with shaving. Test a small patch of skin to make sure you don't have allergies; then apply the cream on all arms, following the instructions on the package. Finally, it exfoliates the skin to remove all traces of residual hair.
- You should avoid sun exposure for 24 hours before and after using the depilatory cream.
- You can decide to apply a product that inhibits hair growth between one hair removal and the other, in order to keep it thinner and softer.
Step 4. Lighten them
If you have a fair complexion and your hair is thin, you can use a bleaching agent. You can use hydrogen peroxide to remove the pigment from the hair; this method greatly reduces their visibility making them a more neutral shade.
Step 5. Try a home wax
This solution allows you to have smooth arms for about 4 weeks. It is therefore a long-lasting and relatively inexpensive method. Try a cold wax kit so you don't risk getting burned. Apply the strips to your arms following the instructions included with the package.
- For waxing to give positive results, the hairs must be at least 6 mm long, so that the product can adhere to it. Wait a few weeks for the hair to grow to a reasonable length before attempting this method.
- You can also make a home wax using sugar and water. Combine 240 g of sugar, 2 tablespoons of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of water in a saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil. Turn the heat down to medium heat. Pour the solution into a glass container when you see it take on a golden, beer-like color. Let it cool slightly and apply it to the skin with a butter knife. At this point, pull firmly upwards and the sugar wax will remove the hair. Apply cornstarch to the skin first to absorb excess moisture.
Method 2 of 2: Professional Solutions
Step 1. Contact a beautician for a professional wax
Many beauty salons offer this service. Hot wax is used to pluck hair from the hair follicle. These professional methods are accurate, although often more expensive than home solutions. The beautician will be able to remove hair on the forearm or even on the entire limb, depending on where the hair grows. Make sure that the beauty center is clean and that the staff are experienced and qualified if you opt for this solution.
Step 2. Try laser hair removal
Laser hair removal uses concentrated beams of light that penetrate the hair follicle and destroy the hair. This method eliminates the hair permanently, which means that over time the growth decreases considerably and within a few years they should disappear completely. For many people, several treatments are needed to avoid regrowth. This is not a permanent solution, but it can take years. It also has few side effects, although after the procedure you may experience some pain that is easily manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
See a dermatologist for this procedure. Make sure he is an experienced doctor and has already done this type of surgery
Step 3. Eliminate hair permanently with electrolysis
The FDA and the American Medical Association believe this is the only definitive method for getting rid of unwanted hair. In this procedure, an electrode is inserted into the skin to bring electrical current to the hair follicle, thus inhibiting hair growth. It is not a painful procedure, although it can leave the skin a little red after each treatment. Several sessions are required and each one on average lasts 15-20 minutes.
