This article explains how to harvest pea pods and obtain seeds. You can use it for both annual and perennial pea plants.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Collect the Pods
Step 1. Let the flowers wilt, fade and fall off naturally
Step 2. Where the flower was attached to the climbing plant, an elongated pod will form to hold the seeds
Step 3. Wait for the colors to change
- The pod will initially take on a bright color, in a medium shade of green. As it ripens, it will swell due to the growth of internal seeds.
- The color of the pod will vary towards a dull yellow-green color, and when the seeds are fully ripe, it will take on light brown tones. (The final color will be similar to that of a paper bread bag.)
- Once the final color is reached, the pods can be harvested from the plant. Arrange them on a plate and let them dry indoors for several days. (The time taken will vary according to the humidity of the environment.)
Step 4. Promote the opening of the pods
As they dry out, the pods will begin to tear near the bottlenecks. You can encourage them to open by running your fingers along the openings, then expanding them to reveal their seeds.
Method 2 of 2: Thoroughly Dry the Seeds
Step 1. Gently remove the seeds from the pod and drop them onto the plate
They will have to keep drying up for a few more days.
- Let them dry indoors, away from drafts.
- Arrange them on a plate or on a tray with sides so as not to waste them.
Step 2. Transfer the seeds to a bag or paper bag
Keep them until you are ready to plant them.
Advice
- Store the seeds in a cool, dry place until sowing time.
- Dried pea seeds are round in shape, about 3mm in size, and light brown or dull green in color.
