Have you ever wanted to sew a unique skirt? Here is a very easy DIY (Do It Yourself).
Steps
Step 1. Measure with the centimeter
Note the circumference of your waist and the widest point of your hips.
Step 2. Buy the fabric:
they are sold in different sizes. If you are going to make a short skirt, buy less fabric, but it will need to be wider than your hips measurement. For a softer fall, opt for a light or medium cotton fabric that is approximately eight cm over your hips. Remember that stretch fabrics are more difficult to sew, especially for beginners, while if it is your first experience as a “stylist”, it is preferable to choose cotton.
Step 3. Buy a rubber band, the size of which will depend on your preference for how you want your skirt to fall
If this is your first time sewing, opt for one that is about 1.3 cm long.
Step 4. Wash the fabric with cold water and let it air dry
Step 5. Spread the fabric out on a flat surface; whether it's a large table or the floor, it should be smooth
Match the two ends.
Step 6. Adjust the pins
At the back of the skirt, along the cut ends, pin the seam you will be making 1.6 cm from the end (to make such a tiny seam, place the pins beyond the hem and then measure 1.6 cm when you go to the machine to sew).
Step 7. Sew with a sewing machine or by hand
Step 8. When you have finished sewing, iron the seam into place
Step 9. Make the band in which to insert the elastic
Turn the top of the skirt 0.6 cm and iron it. Turn the top over for another 2.5 cm and restrain. Sew the band close to the folded part. Leave an opening of about 2.5 cm in the back to insert the elastic.
Step 10. Hem the bottom of the skirt
Turn it about 1 inch (2.5 cm) and iron it both straight and inside out. Sew along the fold.
Step 11. Add the elastic
Cut it to be about 2.5 cm shorter than your waist size and attach a large safety pin on one end. Using the safety pin, pass the elastic through the special band you created in the upper part of the skirt. When you have passed it completely, remove the safety pin and sew the two ends with a zigzag seam. Close the band by sewing it.
If you want, you can add an additional seam to the sides of the skirt or in the back to keep the elastic in place. This will also stabilize the ruffles created by the elastic
Step 12. Add ornaments (optional), such as a zigzag cut or lace, along the bottom of the skirt
Buy them the same length as the fabric. You could also buy some special applications.
Step 13. Customize your next skirt
After learning how to sew a basic one, test yourself by giving it a flared or A shape, a zip closure, flounces or a different life. Be creative and opt for a design that fits your style.
Advice
- If you want to line it, pin the hems of the lining to the hems of the skirt and sew them together.
- To prevent the skirt from fraying, scallop or zigzag the edges.
- If you are particularly thin, you may want to use a pillowcase instead of buying the fabric. Cut the sewn end: you will be halfway through the work, also because the hem is ready.
