It's a dark summer night, you're home and all you want to do is smoke a little. But after you decide to do this, you realize that you don't have a water pipe at hand. Luckily, you can make your own handcrafted one quickly and easily using inexpensive and basic materials.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Gather the Materials
Step 1. Get an empty plastic bottle of any kind
The 500 ml ones are the best, because they are less bulky than the 2 liter ones; anyway, any empty bottle of water or soft drink is fine.
Step 2. Find the tip of a socket wrench
You can buy it in hardware stores, get a 5, 6 mm one; check that it is about 2-3 cm long, with one end thinner and the other with a larger diameter. Also make sure that the hole on the thinnest part is quite small, otherwise the material you want to smoke could fall through it.
Step 3. Gather the rest of the equipment and materials
For this project, you'll need a lighter, a ballpoint pen that you can take apart, some silver tape, and a needle or utility knife, but these two are optional.
Part 2 of 3: Prepare the Bottle
Step 1. Verify that the bottle is empty and clean
Remove the cap and discard it; if there is any residue left in the bottle, pour it; if the bottle contained a soft drink, wash it with hot water to get rid of the traces of sugar. If you want, you can also peel off all the labels.
Step 2. Make a hole for the bowl
Take the lighter and bring the flame close to the side of the bottle, at a point about halfway up. Make sure the fire just touches the plastic to slowly create a small hole; stop when the hole is slightly smaller than the diameter of the pen.

Another method is to make the hole with a sharp needle or cut it out with a utility knife; always check that the opening is no larger than the pen.
Step 3. Make the vent hole
Look at the point where you made the first hole for the ampoule; you have to practice another one near the top of the bottle, but on the opposite side. Ideally, the hole should be in an area where you place a finger of your non-dominant hand spontaneously when you grab the bottle. Hold the flame of the lighter there until a hole forms about twice the diameter of the first one.
You can also make the holes with a needle or a cutter
Part 3 of 3: Secure the Brazier
Step 1. Remove the ballpoint pen
Remove all the pieces until only the empty tube remains. This becomes the stem to attach to the brazier; in theory, it should be of sufficient diameter to fit inside the thinner end of the sleeve.
Step 2. Attach the pen to the tip of the socket
Fit one into the other and secure them with silver adhesive tape; apply a couple of layers to ensure a stable connection.
Step 3. Insert the stem and bowl
Slide the end of the pen without the compass into the hole near the base of the bottle; tilt it down and towards the opposite side of the container, so that the bowl can hold the material without dropping it. Use several layers of duct tape to secure the pen to the bottle and create a watertight seal. Fill the bottle with a few inches of water and the pipe is finished.
You have to insert the pen as much as possible, the best angle is the one that allows the tip of the ballpoint pen to touch the bottom of the bottle on the opposite side from the hole
Step 4. Finished
Advice
Allen screws with the smallest diameter are the most suitable; try to get a pen and compass that fit snugly into each other
Warnings
- Once the holes are burned, wait for them to cool before touching them.
- Do not inhale the smoke emanating from the burning plastic.
- Don't burn yourself as you pierce the holes in the bottle.
- Do not inhale large puffs of smoke, as it is very aggressive on the throat.
