Don't have time to prepare a good hearty breakfast? Do you hate washing the pans where you cooked the eggs? You could use the microwave to make an omelette! It is a quick and easy solution and is ideal if you want to have a healthy and hearty breakfast even if you don't have the time or way to cook.
Ingrediants
Doses for one person
- 1 teaspoon of butter
- 2 eggs
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of water
- A pinch of salt (the tip of a teaspoon)
- A pinch of pepper
- 50-75 grams of topping, optional (diced ham, cheese flakes, etc.)
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Use a terrine or a baking dish
Step 1. Put the butter in a shallow bowl or baking dish and melt it in the microwave
Cooking times vary according to the power of the microwave. It usually takes about 45 seconds at maximum power.
This will make the omelette richer and tastier. To save time, you can grease the inside of the dish with a drizzle of olive oil
Step 2. Tilt the bowl to distribute the butter over the entire inner surface
This will prevent the eggs from sticking and make it easier to clean the container. If you prefer to use olive oil instead of butter, spread it over the bottom and sides with a pastry brush.
Step 3. Whisk together the eggs, water, salt and pepper in a bowl
Keep whisking until the egg yolks are completely broken and until you get a homogeneous mixture. There should be no streaks of yolk or egg white.
Step 4. Pour the mixture into the greased baking dish and cover it with cling film, which must be tight
You can also cover it with a microwave-safe dish if you prefer. This will prevent the eggs from escaping from the container, making a mess.
Step 5. Cook the eggs for about 1 minute, or until they are almost ready
After about 30 seconds, put the microwave on pause and move the already cooked edges of the omelette away from the edges of the pan, pushing them towards the center with a fork.
Step 6. If desired, add the topping
When the eggs have set and there is no more liquid, take the dish out of the microwave and remove the plastic wrap. Arrange the filling on half of the omelette only. Some types of toppings, such as herbs and cheese, can be used raw, while others, such as ham and bacon, require cooking.
- For example, you can use diced bacon, chopped onion or cheese flakes.
- You can limit yourself to using a single ingredient, or indulge yourself with different combinations.

Step 7. Fold the omelet in half
Insert a kitchen spatula under the unguarded half and turn it upside down so that it covers the filling.
Step 8. Arrange the omelette on a serving plate
Serve immediately. If you wish, you can garnish it with part of the filling, or with some fresh herbs, such as chives.
Method 2 of 3: Use a Microwave Mug
Step 1. Grease the inside of a 350-500ml microwave-safe cup with olive oil
Alternatively, you can use a small piece of butter. The capacity of the cup must be large in relation to the contents, because the eggs will expand during cooking.
Step 2. Put the eggs, salt and pepper into the cup and beat the mixture well with a fork
Keep whisking until the egg yolks break completely and mix with the egg whites evenly. No streaks should remain.
Step 3. Cook for 1 minute
The eggs will probably not be ready yet. That's okay, because you still have to add the topping and mix it up a bit.
Step 4. Add any topping
Some types of toppings, such as cheese, can be used raw, while others, such as ham and bacon, require cooking.
- For example, you can use diced bacon, chopped shallot or cheese flakes.
- You can limit yourself to using a single ingredient, or indulge yourself with different combinations.

Step 5. Give the eggs a quick stir and cook for another 1-2 minutes
Cooking times depend on the power of the microwave. When the omelette is puffy and the liquid has dried, it's ready.
Step 6. Serve the omelette
You can eat it straight from the cup or, better yet, place it on a plate. To remove the omelette, pass the blade of a knife along the flush edges of the cup, then turn it over onto a serving plate.
Method 3 of 3: Choose the filling and indulge yourself with the ingredients
Step 1. Think about a possible filling
It is not necessary to use all the steps of this method. Choose the ones that appeal to you the most. If you don't come up with bright ideas on how to combine ingredients, you can refer to the tasty variations recommended at the end of this method.
Step 2. For a particularly healthy recipe, add 2 tablespoons of chopped or diced vegetables
Unless you prefer to consume raw vegetables, boil or sauté them before adding them to the eggs. The most suitable vegetables for an omelette are these:
- Red or green peppers
- Mushrooms
- Shallot
- Spinach
- Tomatoes
- Onions (especially golden)
Step 3. For a protein-rich recipe, add 2 tablespoons of minced or diced meat
Whatever type of meat you put in, it must already be cooked: a short microwave cooking would not be enough. The types of meat suitable for an omelette can be for example:
- Bacon
- Dried ham
- Sausage
Step 4. Add some herbs for further flavor
You can use fresh or dried herbs. According to many recipes, the ideal amount is a tablespoon of fresh herbs. If they are dried, reduce the amount to a teaspoon, as they are much more potent and concentrated. Here is a list of herbs suitable for an omelette:
- Basil
- Chervil
- Chives
- Coriander or parsley
- Tarragon
- thyme
Step 5. Enhance the flavor of the omelette with lots of cheese
You need 1-2 tablespoons of cheese flakes. Gruyere, Emmental, Gouda, Edamer, Leerdammer, or thin slices are good. You can also use shredded mozzarella or grated parmesan. An alternative is crumbled feta or another goat cheese.
Step 6. Make a yummy omelette with cheese, ham and peppers
You need 2-3 tablespoons of cheese flakes, 2 tablespoons of diced ham and 1 tablespoon of diced peppers.
Step 7. Try making an omelette with tomato and basil
Add 100 grams of diced fresh tomatoes, 1 tablespoon of chopped basil and 1 tablespoon of Parmesan to the omelette.
Step 8. Add a touch of spicy Mexican cuisine
Fill the omelette with 2 tablespoons of cheese flakes. If you fold it in half, you can garnish it with another 2 tablespoons of cheese flakes. Serve with 2-4 tablespoons of Mexican hot sauce.
Step 9. Try a healthy omelet stuffed with feta and spinach
Stuff it with 1 tablespoon of grilled and chopped red peppers, about 50 grams of spinach, 1 tablespoon of feta cheese and 1 tablespoon of chopped green onion.
Step 10. Make a sweet omelet
Don't use pepper and use sugar instead of salt. Fill it with fresh fruit (for example, chopped strawberries) or jam. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
Step 11. Finished
Advice
- Get creative! Try combining different ingredients and spices together.
- As a filling for a sandwich or toast, omelette is delicious.
- Before adding the ingredients to the eggs, cook them.
- Make a flavorful omelet with cheese, meat or seafood. You can also add vegetables.
- If the eggs aren't ready yet, let them rest for a minute before serving. Since they are protein foods, they continue to cook even after they have been removed from the heat or microwave.
- If you need to serve more, prepare them one at a time.
Warnings
- Cooking times vary according to the power of the microwave. Some models cook an egg in 1 minute. Others take 2 or 3 minutes.
- Make sure the eggs are well cooked before consuming them.
- To take the bowl out of the microwave, use pot holders.
