The Armenian language (հայերեն լեզու, Armenian pronunciation: [hɑjɛɹɛn lɛzu] - hayeren lezow, whose conventional short form is hayeren) is an Indo-European language spoken by the Armenian people. It is the official language of the Republic of Armenia and the Nagorno-Karabakh region. This language is also spoken to a large extent by the Armenian communities living in other parts of the world created after the Armenian diaspora. It has its own alphabet, the Armenian alphabet. Linguists normally classify Armenian as an independent branch of the Indo-European family. Some Indo-Europeanists, especially Clackson (1994), have proposed grouping Armenian into the Hellenic (Greek) branch. This proposal derives from the so-called Greco-Armenian hypothesis in combination with the Greco-Aryan hypothesis (Renfrew, Clackson and Fortson 1994).
