Seafoam is a useful additive for various maintenance jobs on the car; it is able to remove deposits in the engine, injection system and oil system. Make sure you know the exact doses to use, as too much can cause more harm than good.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: for the Engine
Step 1. Warm up the engine
Park the vehicle in a well-ventilated area and start the engine; wait for it to warm up to normal operating temperature.
- You must proceed in an area with good air circulation, as this procedure generates a lot of smoke.
- On cars with automatic transmission the gear lever must be placed in the parking position (P), while on those with manual transmission the lever must be in neutral, with the parking brake activated all the time.
Step 2. Locate the engine filler manifold
Open the hood and find the system that evenly reaches all the cylinders of the engine.
- In most cases, the best thing to do is work on the front manifold starting from the brake booster positive pressure valve.
- Since the configuration of the various vehicles is different, it may be necessary to choose a different procedure; if in doubt, consult a professional before continuing.
Step 3. Disconnect the hose
Carefully detach the end of the manifold you have chosen.
If you are using the one for the brake booster, disconnect the hose that reaches the manifold; the control valve should remain on the hose that connects to the brake booster; check that the Seafoam does not go beyond this valve during maintenance work
Step 4. Slowly pour the product into the tube
Proceed carefully and transfer 1 / 3-1 / 2 of the contents of the bottle directly into the conduit you disconnected.
- If necessary, put a funnel in the opening of the tube and pour the Seafoam through it.
- The manufacturer does not recommend transferring the additive by suction.
Step 5. Simultaneously increase the engine revolutions
A helper should bring the revs up to 2000 rpm while pouring the additive.
White smoke is likely to come out of the exhaust pipe; this is a normal phenomenon and you shouldn't worry
Step 6. Let the motor rest
As soon as you are done adding the Seafoam to the manifold, turn off the engine and wait 10-30 minutes.
The longer you wait, the more the product penetrates the engine. If you usually take care of your car regularly, you shouldn't wait more than 10 minutes, but if the engine is in poor condition and you are afraid there will be a lot of encrustation, it is best to let the substance act for half an hour
Step 7. Drive the car until the smoke returns to its normal color
Start the engine and drive aggressively for 5-10 minutes or until the thick white smoke stops coming out of the tailpipe.
- However, remember to respect the highway code; if possible, go to the motorway or ring road where it is possible to travel at 100 km / h. You should do this in the evening or during hours when traffic is not a problem, as you produce a lot of smoke.
- When the emissions return to normal, the engine cleaning is complete.
Method 2 of 3: for the Fuel Injection System
Step 1. Evaluate the dose of additive you need
Find the tank capacity, you need 30ml of Seafoam for every 4 liters of fuel.
Adding the product directly to the tank has several benefits: it eliminates encrustations from the injectors and makes the car run more smoothly; in addition, it controls the accumulation of moisture in the fuel, stabilizes the latter and lubricates the upper cylinders
Step 2. Fill up
Go to the gas station and fill the tank to maximum capacity with gasoline of the appropriate octane rating.
- However, remember to leave enough room for the dose of Seafoam you calculated earlier.
- Although the additive can be used with any type of gasoline, it is advisable to use one that has at least an octane number of 91; this type of fuel needs more heat and compression for combustion, thereby improving vehicle performance. In such conditions Seafoam brings several benefits.
Step 3. Pour it directly into the tank
Put a long-necked funnel in the opening and add the amount of additive you calculated earlier.
- Go slowly to avoid splashing.
- The funnel prevents the product from being poured out of the car. Given the position of the tank opening and the shape of the Seafoam bottle, it is practically impossible to transfer the liquid without the help of a funnel.
Step 4. Drive the car
Put the fuel cap back in place and drive at a constant speed for at least 5 minutes.
- In the meantime, the additive mixes with the petrol, improving its quality and simultaneously cleaning the injectors.
- To maximize the effects of the Seafoam, try to run out of gas before refilling the tank.
- At the end of this step, the process is complete.
Method 3 of 3: for the Oil Implant
Step 1. Calculate the right amount of additive
You need 60 ml of Seafoam for every 4 liters of oil.
- This work involves pouring the product directly into the vehicle oil; since it is a petroleum derivative, you can mix it without any problem and without worrying about possible engine damage.
- When used in this manner, the additive dissolves old oil deposits by cleaning the carburetor body and ducts.
Step 2. Work with a cold engine
If it is on at this time, turn it off and wait until it is completely cool before continuing.
Adding room temperature Seafoam to hot oil can shock the carburetor valve springs and damage the vehicle
Step 3. Pour it into the carburetor opening
Remove the oil cap from the engine and pour the calculated amount of Seafoam directly into the carburetor.
Consider using a funnel for this; it is not strictly necessary, but it reduces the likelihood of accidental splashing
Step 4. Drive for 400 km
Put the oil cap back in place, close the hood of the vehicle and drive as usual for 400km.
- Once you have traveled between 160 and 400 km, you should have an oil change. Seafoam is a powerful additive and the filter may have a hard time tolerating it; moreover, the quality of the oil worsens after this distance.
- After driving this route and changing the oil, the process is complete.
