Depending on the position in which the object is stuck in the toilet, you may have to remove the entire toilet from the floor to retrieve it.

Steps

Method 1 of 2:

Step 1. Get a Sewer Snake

It's a coiled cable that you can unwind to free clogged drains. If you don't have one, take a hanger and stretch it out with pliers to make a long, stiff cable.

Step 2. Push the snake or cable into the cup and, if possible, grab the object trying to pull it up and out

If you can't grab it, don't push it further down, or you may end up blocking the drain hose.

Step 1. In case the first method doesn't work, you should remove the toilet

At the base of the toilet, there are metal screws on each side, complete with nuts that keep the toilet attached to the floor (the nuts are hidden by pull-out caps).

Step 2. Close the water; there should be a valve under or behind the toilet, from which the water passes from the wall / floor

If there is none, or if the valve is blocked, close the main switch of the house (it should be in the basement, near the passage between city and domestic water).

Step 3. Pull the water to empty the tank

If there is any residue, wipe it with a sponge. You will need to drain the cup with a bucket and a sponge to remove all the water.

Step 5. With someone's help, lift the toilet off the floor

Lift it out of the cup, not the tank (there will be some wax residue on the bottom of the cup and on the floor due to the seal).

Step 8. Once the object has been removed, put the toilet back in place (in the opposite order to removal), reopen the water and let the tank and cup fill up again

Advice

If you have had to remove the toilet from the floor, you will need to replace the wax seal. Any DIY or hardware store sells these accessories; they are inexpensive and should be replaced every time a toilet is removed to work on the floor, paint, etc. The waxed seal creates a waterproof barrier between the toilet and the drain pipes. Take a spatula and remove any remnants of the old seal on the bottom of the toilet and on the floor, before installing the new seal

Warnings

  • If the toilet is removed from the floor, cover the drain pipe with a rag to avoid the spread of harmful and explosive gases from the sewers into your home. Always remember to remove the rag when you reattach the toilet.
  • Always tighten the screws on the toilet with your hands, or you risk breaking the porcelain. Once the screws are tight, make 1/4 turn with the pliers.
  • When you reset the toilet, gently push it over the waxed seal and move it carefully to secure it properly. You can let the toilet squeeze the seal with its own weight, or you can sit on it.
  • Move the toilet carefully. Porcelain cup and tank break / damage easily.
