How fun can it be to destroy rookies on Xbox Live if you don't have a unique Gamertag they can remember and fear? Thankfully, picking a great, memorable name isn't difficult. With a few simple tips, you will quickly find a wonderful name for you.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Come up with a Beautiful Name
Step 1. Use a pun on your real name or nickname
Can't find a good Gamertag? Your real name is a great place to start. Try to find a pun on your first or last name. If you have a nickname, you can use that. Another idea is to refer to a fictional character with a similar name to yours.
-
Examples:
if your name is Mario Rossi you could try XxRossixX, MRossi95, SuperMario1234, or OttobreRosso4589.
- Do not include your full name in your Gamertag. Remember that everyone who plays with you on Xbox Live will be able to see your name. For security reasons, it's a good idea to keep your real identity secret.
Step 2. Base your name on your favorite game
If you love a specific game, you can refer to it in your name. It doesn't matter how often you play it. You could choose a name inspired by a character from that game. You can also choose a less obvious reference, such as a location, weapon, or event.
-
Examples:
if you are a fan of the Halo series, you could try MasterChief3000, MrNeedler, CortanaLover99, CovenantSquad01, or EliteHammer.
Step 3. Refer to your favorite hobby or interest
Video games aren't the only interest you have, so they don't have to be the only thing that inspires your name. Tap into the vast array of skills, hobbies and interests to find an idea. You could refer to an animal you like, a band you are a fan of, your dream car, or whatever. Choose freely!
-
Examples:
if you are a musician, you can try names with musical terms like AltiKill333, IstintiBassi, AssoloMortale, Sibemolle and so on.
Step 4. Choose an intimidating name
Do you want to completely destroy your internet competition? Let everyone know how strong you are with a name that calls attention to your deadly ability with a controller. Choose a name that is scary, lethal or evil. However, please note that racially or abusive content is prohibited by the Xbox Live Terms of Service.
-
Examples:
7 Obliterator9, MisssJennyDeath, Trembling Newbies, KillerMike, etc.
Step 5. Be dark and mysterious
Another way to make your opponents tremble is to not openly say that you will destroy them. Just suggest it. Names that imply mystery or suspicion are quite popular like Gamertag. In some cases, it's best not to tell your enemies everything.
-
Examples:
Shadowmaster, Ninja765, Invisible Death, DietrodiTe!
Step 6. Make a joke or a pun
Your Gamertag doesn't have to be bleak or serious. In fact, choosing a more cheerful one can make you seem more open to dialogue. Such a name can be useful if you need to work with your team to achieve a goal. Names that make you laugh at first sight are always good choices. Since you don't have a lot of characters, quick jokes are often the easiest.
-
Examples:
MissKLurina, CubaBaddingJR, LAltro, EhiTu (so as to create confusion when people talk to you in the game).
- You can try an online tool like Pun Generator (available here) if you can't find ideas.
Step 7. Use another language
A few words in a language other than Italian will be enough to get a unique Gamertag in Italy. You have many choices in this case. The first is to translate a beautiful name already taken into another language. You can also try using that language equivalent of your real name. You may even just find a word you like - the choice is yours!
-
Examples:
if you like bears, try Bear734 ("Bear" is "bear" in English) or 123Ayi ("Ayı" is "bear" in Turkish).
- Take advantage of online translators like Google Translate and Freetranslation.com who can help you with these kinds of names.
Step 8. Choose a random name
There is no rule that says your name must make sense. In fact, the more random your name is, the more unlikely it is that it has already been chosen. Try combining two words that have nothing in common or using a casual adjective to describe a word you like. Use all your creativity!
-
Examples:
VolpeMagnifica, PillarOceanico1524, PantoMimo93, Sette8Sei, etc.
- You can even use a nonsense word or phrase.
Part 2 of 3: Picking a Name That Has None
Step 1. Check the availability of the name online
Before logging in and choosing a Gamertag, save some time by checking if the name you have chosen has already been taken. There are some sites that allow you to do this on the internet. With a simple search you will find many.
Try this site for example
Step 2. Add extra characters if needed
Has the perfect gamertag already been taken? Do not worry! You can probably get a very similar name by adding or changing a few letters. The simplest way is to enter a series of numbers at the beginning or end of the name. You can also try to spell the name differently, change the spaces and so on.
For example, you might want the name "MrJim", but if it was already taken, you might try "MrJim127482," "123Mr Jim456," or something similar
Step 3. Use "decorative" fonts
Another common way that players get the name they want is to create designs on the sides of the name. You can do this with the numbers and letters available. So you can give the impression that your name is bejeweled or decorated. There is no right way to do this, but symmetrical letter arrangements like X, O, I, and Y are pretty common.
For example, if you want the name "Slaughterer", but it has already been chosen, you could try "xXMassacratoreXx", "OoOoMassacatoreoOoO", or something similar
Step 4. Include your clan
In online games, clans are basically "clubs" that passionate players can join to play with people they know. Often, players promote their clan by entering the clan name at the beginning of their username. This can also help you get a name already chosen - probably, the version of your favorite name with the clan name will be free before.
- For example, if you belong to the "Fire" clan and want the name "Laser33", you could add the clan name like this. "xFuocoxLaser33"
- Clans often give instructions on the format to be adopted for the Gamertag. Make sure you follow the directions!
Part 3 of 3: Know What to Avoid
Step 1. Don't choose a Gamertag with offensive language
There are a few rules that dictate what you can and can't put into your Gamertag. You can read these rules in the Xbox Live Code of Conduct. All players must accept this code when signing up for Live. The main rule is that offensive terms are not allowed. Accounts that break this rule can be suspended or banned. The Code's definition of "offensive language" includes:
- Swearing
- Hateful terms (sexist or racially motivated)
- References to illegal drugs
- Controversial religious topics
- Controversial historical figures or events
Step 2. Do not create a Gamertag with sexual references
The other important rule about Gamertags is that very few sexual terms are allowed in user names. As a general rule, anything that could be considered "dirty" is prohibited. I am though granted some neat terms. These terms are:
- "Gay," "Bi," and "Lesbian"
- "Transgender"
- "Hetero"
Step 3. Don't try names that resemble offensive terms
Even if your Gamertag isn't technically offensive, your account may still receive bans or punishments if your name tries to get around the rules with words that involve offensive concepts. It is usually obvious when a user tries to "cheat" the Code of Conduct, so such names are almost always time-wasting.
The name "Adolph Hitler" would undoubtedly be prohibited under the rule against controversial historical figures. But a name like "A. Dolph Hit L. R." it would be equally forbidden, because it clearly refers to the same person
Step 4. Do not sell or buy Gamertag
Whichever Gamertag you choose to use, make sure it's yours. Buying and selling Gamertag goes against the Xbox Live Code of Conduct. In these cases, both buyers and buyers may be subject to punishment or bans.
If someone has already taken the name you want, use the tricks in the previous sections to find a similar name. Don't try to buy or steal that name
Step 5. Do not impersonate or defame any other person
Choosing a name that intends to belittle the name of another, through imitation or personal attacks is not allowed. This applies to other players, moderators, game developers and Microsoft staff. Make sure your name is really yours.
Imitating authority figures such as moderators and staff members is a tactic commonly used by scammers. If you choose a similar name, albeit with the best intentions, you may still get a ban
Advice
- Make your gamertag unique. If you're inspired by your friend's, always ask for permission first as they may not be happy if you copy their once unique gamertag, and it may not be easy to change it again.
- Are you still undecided? Microsoft can provide you with suggestions in the 'Change Gamertag' menu.
- Gamertags can only contain alphanumeric characters (A-Z and 0-9) and spaces. If you use other characters you will be prompted to change the name.
Warnings
- Don't join a clan without asking first! Always ask a clan leader to be allowed to enter before modifying the Gamertag.
- Adding xX or similar decorative fonts is often considered an unoriginal and inconvenient practice.
