You love to read and are dying to get your hands on a book. But you've already read your books a couple of times and are tired of always having the same ones. You are planning to go to the library or bookstore but you don't know what to choose. Don't worry, with the right advice, it's easy to pick a good book!
Steps
Step 1. Make a list by answering these questions:
- What kind of book do you like? Science fiction, adventure, mystery, novels, essays?
-
What authors do you like? Look for books by authors you have enjoyed in the past. It is possible that they have posted something else that is to your taste.
- Is there a specific type of book or book you would like to try?
- Are there any books in a series that you would like to read?
- What are your interests? Enter your hobbies in the "keywords" search window of your library catalog.
Step 2. Search the house
Often good books are hidden in the house that are only there to gather dust. Maybe you've forgotten them or someone who lives with you has a couple of interesting reads.
Step 3. Ask someone to recommend a good book
You can ask your older siblings, your mother or father, your best friend or even your literature professor. Friends or relatives with whom you have something in common can give you some great recommendations. Small local bookstores can often give you good advice, especially if the boss or employees know you in person.
Step 4. Read book reviews in newspapers or magazines
Check out the best-seller list and find out which books are featured in the newspapers and why.
Step 5. Join a reading club
Being a member of a reading group is often a good way to discover new books that you would never have gotten to read on your own.
Step 6. Check for computers in the library or bookstore
If so, check the online catalog. Use it to find in a certain book, books by a certain author or others belonging to a certain genre.
Step 7. Ask the librarian or bookseller on which shelf to find the book you are looking for
He will be happy to help you.
Step 8. Scroll through the shelves in the section that interests you
If you see something you like, grab the book and read the back cover. Quickly read the plot and if you like it go to the first page. If you still like it after reading the first few sentences, this is probably the book for you. You might be interested in the topic, but the key is also an interest in the style of writing. So if you like it, get it. Repeat this until you have a couple of books to take home.
Step 9. Find a quiet place to sit, or stand if you have to, and read the first chapter of each book you have chosen
Of course, if you have a lot of them, you may need a lot of time.
Step 10. Shrink the stack of books
If you would like to have just one book instead of three, put away the ones that interest you least.
Step 11. Look for a list of recommended books from your favorite writers
Chances are you like what they suggest.
Step 12. Go to the Gutenberg.org site
You will find many e-books to download, print or read on your computer for free.
Advice
- Do not damage the library books. You don't want to have to pay them back!
- It's not a problem if you borrow too many books and then can't read them all. Just make sure you return them on time. If you have a lot of them, bring a backpack or bag.
- Create your reading list. When someone recommends a book to you, write it down immediately and look for it the next time you go to the library or bookstore.
- Make a list and take it with you to the library. That way you won't forget any of the titles.
- If you liked the books you have chosen, they may serve as a reference for the future. Often, if you search for a book on a website, you will find suggestions with similar books. For example, if you are looking for a book on Amazon you can find the section "Who Bought This Item Also Bought". But don't just limit yourself to this category, try different books, you never know what you'll find!
- Make sure the book is for your age group. Of course, there's nothing wrong with reading a children's book from time to time, just for fun.
- Return the book to the library before the loan expires or you will have to pay penalties.
Warnings
- Do not judge a book by its cover.
- Don't think you have to read a book just because everyone has read it. If you are reading something and you can't go on or you don't like it, you can safely leave it halfway.
- Reading can be addictive, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. Just make sure this activity doesn't interfere too much with your work or daily activities.
