Swarovski crystals are used to create fabulous jewelry, but it can sometimes be difficult to clean. They are covered with a thin protective layer of gold or rhodium which does not allow the use of numerous cleaning methods. Fortunately, there are a few simple strategies you can use to take care of your Swarovski crystals. Use a dry cloth for general maintenance and quick cleaning, or dishwashing detergent for more thorough but sporadic cleaning. Read on to learn how to clean and maintain your Swarovski crystal encrusted jewelry.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Wipe with a Lint Free Cloth
Step 1. Hold the jewel in one hand and the cloth in the other
It is also preferable to wear a pair of cotton gloves to handle the jewel, since, by touching it with your bare hands, there is the risk of leaving your fingerprints imprinted on the crystals. To carry out a quick cleaning or general maintenance of this kind of jewelry, it is best to use a dry cloth.
Step 2. Polish the crystals
Use a smooth, lint-free cloth to gently polish each crystal individually. To make each Swarovski element shine, make small circular movements. If you periodically polish your crystal jewelry with a lint-free cloth, you will be able to preserve its luster and beauty for years.
Step 3. Continue polishing them
Continue until you have cleaned all the crystals and are satisfied with the result. If they still look dull or dirty, you can use a cleaning method that involves using water.
Method 2 of 3: Clean with a Mild Dishwashing Detergent
Step 1. Collect the supplies
You will need a soft-bristled toothbrush (an old one you no longer intend to use will do), some dish soap, a small bowl of water, and a smooth, lint-free cloth. You may want to use this method when you want to do a more thorough cleaning or occasional maintenance operations. Do not use it too often or you run the risk of removing some of the thin protective coating on the crystals.
Step 2. Moisten the soft-bristled toothbrush
It is best to have a small bowl of water on hand to moisten the toothbrush while cleaning the crystals.
Step 3. Apply a small amount of detergent to the moistened toothbrush
Use only a small amount at first, and as needed, add some more as you go.
Step 4. Clean the crystals
Use the toothbrush to gently remove dirt from each individual crystal. Don't rub. Move the toothbrush gently in circular motions, so you will gradually remove all the dirt residue. Focus on one crystal at a time.
Step 5. Rinse off the detergent
Put the crystals under a stream of warm running water to remove the soap. ATTENTION: the crystals will be slippery! Therefore it is recommended to place a small bowl or colander on the sink drain, in case the jewel gets out of hand.
Step 6. Dry the crystals
Blot them gently with a soft, lint-free cloth. After that, you should leave the jewel on the same cloth until you are sure that it has completely dried. Do not store it if it is not completely dry.
Method 3 of 3: Keep Swarovski Crystal Jewelry Clean
Step 1. Put on your jewelry
Do not put it on before you have applied the cream, makeup, perfume and hair products. Otherwise, there is a risk of it getting dirty or coming into contact with corrosive chemicals, which could permanently damage it.
Step 2. Remove the jewelry before going to the pool, showering, bathing or washing your hands
The chlorine contained in swimming pool and hot tub water can damage the thin coating that protects and lends the Swarovski crystals shine. Soap and other body care products can also damage the protective layer and cause permanent damage.
Step 3. Store it in a soft fabric bag
Keep the Swarovski crystal jewelry separate from the rest of the jewelry by locking it in a case to prevent it from being scratched or twisted. You can also store it in its original box.
Step 4. Never use a hard tool to clean the crystals
Do not scrape or scrape dirt off Swarovski crystal encrusted jewelry, otherwise you risk scratching the protective coating, damaging them permanently.
Advice
To clean Swarovski crystals, consider purchasing a jewelry cleaning cloth and a pair of cotton gloves. Polish your jewelry after wearing it to keep it in top condition
Warnings
- Never use alcohol, toothpaste or other abrasive cleaners to clean this kind of jewelry. You could remove or scratch the protective layer they are coated with, damaging them irreparably. Also avoid jewelry cleaners that contain alcohol.
- Do not immerse them in water or cleaning solution. There is a risk that the crystals become opaque and the metal parts become damaged.
- Do not expose a Swarovski crystal jewel to high temperatures and sunlight. Excessive heat can damage the thin coating that covers it and change its appearance.
