If you have enough hair to make a ponytail, you also have enough hair to make a bun. By pinning them back with bobby pins, rather than twisting them as you would if they were longer, you can create an impression of more volume. Choose to create a ballerina-style high bun or a low messy bun or opt for a low ponytail with a noose for a simple look that never fades.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Ballerina Style High Chignon
Step 1. Collect your hair in a ponytail
Use a comb to pick up the hair at the top of the head or just slightly below it, depending on your preference. Secure them with a rubber band. Make sure it is well positioned to avoid an imperfect result.
- Try using bobby pins or spray hairspray to fix the hair at the top of your head.
- This method is suitable for hair that is long enough to be pinned on top of the head. If your hair is too short, opt for a low or side bun.
Step 2. Tease the tail with a comb
This will add volume and texture to your bun. Take a section of hair and pull it straight out. Place a comb at the ends and move it towards the roots, gently teasing the hair. Repeat with a subsequent section until your ponytail is completely backcombed.
- Use a fine toothed comb instead of a brush, your hair won't be damaged as much.
- If you prefer a regular and shiny chignon, you can skip this step, knowing that the result will be smaller and will have less volume.
Step 3. Divide the tail into two sections
Simply divide it into two equal parts to make it look like a fish's tail. Make sure both are equal in size.
Step 4. Twist one section down and pin it to the end
Turn it down and pin it under the tail to form a crescent-like curve. Use several bobby pins to hold the ends in place. By doing this you will have created the first half of your bun.
- Do not twist your hair too tightly, or it may be difficult to hold it in place with the bobby pins. Just roll the section of hair once or twice on itself.
- Make sure the ends are completely covered and pinned under the tail so they are not visible.
Step 5. Twist the second section of hair and secure the ends
Take the remaining section of hair and roll it up, over the ponytail, then make sure the ends are not visible and secure them with numerous bobby pins. The second half of the chignon was also created.
- Again, twist your hair gently instead of twisting the section hard, otherwise the bobby pins may fail to secure it in place.
- Check the result in the mirror and make sure the ends are not visible.
Step 6. Use more hairpins and some spray hair to fix any unruly strands, spray the hairspray directly on the chignon as well
Also check the back of the head using two mirrors, and use more bobby pins if necessary. Complete the look with an additional application of hairspray to ensure the desired duration.
- For more volume, use your fingers to slightly spread the bun.
- If you wish, let two strands of hair fall freely on the sides of the face to frame it.
Method 2 of 3: Messy Low Chignon
Step 1. Gather the hair at the base of the neck
Secure them securely with a rubber band. This type of chignon is suitable for any short cut, as long as it is possible to tie all the hair in a low ponytail.
If you prefer to create a side bun, gather your hair to the right or left of the nape rather than the center. A side bun is an ideal look for a prom, party, or elegant dinner
Step 2. Toss the tail with the comb
Pull the tail outward and backcomb it by combing it from root to tip, section by section. You will add volume to the chignon and get a natural messy effect.
If you prefer a more elegant and tidy result, you can skip this step
Step 3. Pin the hair next to the base of the ponytail
Take a small section of hair and twist it around the ponytail, then pin the ends right next to its elastic. Continue with more sections, twisting and securing them firmly and invisibly under the bun.
- For an even more messy look, leave a few strands of hair free.
- For a more refined result, divide the tail into two equal sections, twist them both and pin the ends under the tail. You will get a low ballerina style chignon.
Step 4. Use the spray hairspray to set the hairstyle
Spray it on the bun and the rest of the hair to prevent the bun from melting easily.
Method 3 of 3: Simple Low Tail with Loop
Step 1. Prepare your hair by applying a gel or foam product
Both will give the look a slightly wet and shiny effect, as well as make it longer lasting. Rub a small amount of product between your hands and apply it to the hair from root to tip, making sure to distribute it evenly.
If you prefer a dry and matte finish, you can skip this step
Step 2. Gather the hair at the bottom of the head
Use a comb to pull your hair perfectly back in order to create a sleek and regular result. Secure them in a low ponytail at the nape of the neck or a little higher, depending on your preference.
Step 3. Make a loop with the hair and then secure it with a second elastic
Pull the tail back and then fold it in half on itself, forming a loop. Now secure it with a second rubber band at the base of the tail. The tip of the tail should hang down the neck, outside the elastic.
Step 4. Apply a spray hairspray to set the hairstyle
Spray it on the loop and the rest of the hair to extend the duration of your look.
Advice
- Don't overdo it with the amount of hairspray, otherwise your hair will look greasy.
- Twist the hair around itself to ensure perfect hold.
- If you want to add volume to your hairstyle, tease your hair before combing it back.
- Decorate the hairstyle with a headband or some pretty bobby pins.
- Secure any unruly strands with bobby pins or bobby pins the same color as your hair.
- If the length of your hair does not allow you to tie it in a ponytail, prefer the proposed third option (simple low ponytail with a loop).
