If your hair is medium length, the chignon is the perfect hairstyle for you. The hair is not so heavy that it comes out of the bun, but at the same time it has the ideal length to create a series of cute hairstyles. Learn to do three hairstyles for your medium length hair: the high ballerina bun, the disheveled bohemian bun, and the braided bun.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: High Ballerina Bun
Step 1. Gather your hair into a high ponytail
Use a comb to pull the hair up high on the head and secure it with a special rubber band. Make sure that at the sides, back and top the hair is close to the head and that the elastic is tight so that the bun does not come undone.
- The ballerina bun is usually placed right on top of the head, but you can very well place it lower, towards the nape of the neck. Just make sure it's fixed well.
- If you have strands of hair that don't fit into the elastic, secure them with bobby pins.
Step 2. Cotton your ponytail
This will increase the volume of your hair and make the bun look bigger, as if your hair is long and thick. To tease your hair, pull the ponytail up, insert the teeth of the comb just below the tips and comb the hair backwards, towards the hairline. Repeat this until the tail is completely backcombed.
If you prefer to have a soft and smooth bun, you can skip this step. Just remember that it will be smaller than your typical ballerina bun as your hair is shorter
Step 3. Divide the ponytail into two parts
With your hands, separate the two strands of hair to form a fishtail. Make sure the two parts are the same size.
Step 4. Wrap one of the two parts around the elastic and secure it with bobby pins
Twist it as you wrap it around the elastic to give it a cute spiral effect. Wrap it tightly against your head. Use several bobby pins to lock the tips in place. You have thus completed the first part of your ballerina bun.
Step 5. Wrap the other strand of hair around the elastic and secure it with bobby pins
Twist it as you wrap it and attach it tightly to your head around the exposed part of the elastic. Insert the tips into the elastic and hold them in place using several bobby pins.
Step 6. Insert the tips that are left out
Check your hair in the mirror to make sure the hairstyle was done correctly and pinch any loose ends with bobby pins. Complete the hairstyle by applying strong hold hairspray to secure your bun.
Method 2 of 3: Low Bohemian Chignon
Step 1. Part your hair to the side
The bohemian chignon usually features a side parting. Part where you usually do, or move it further down to give this hairstyle a more elegant look, suitable for an evening event. Use a comb to make sure the part is straight.
Step 2. Collect the hair at the height where you want to place the bun
Normally a bohemian chignon is placed at the nape of the neck, but you can very well position it higher if you prefer. If you want to create a ceremonial hairstyle, consider placing the bun sideways just below ear level.
Step 3. Wrap the elastic around your hair once
Choose a very tight elastic as this hairstyle tends to melt more easily than others. Take the elastic and apply it to the collected hair.
Step 4. Wrap the elastic around the ponytail to make a bun shaped like a noose
Twist the elastic to pull your hair through without completing the operation. You must stop when only half of the queue has passed. At this point you have a noose-shaped chignon blocked by the elastic.
Check that the elastic holds the bun tight. If it feels soft, apply another elastic and tighten it around the bun to keep it in place
Step 5. Wrap the ends of the hair around the elastic
Take the tips that stick out and wrap them around the elastic tightly against your head. The aim is to completely cover the elastic and make it invisible. Secure your hair with bobby pins.
Step 6. Complete the hairstyle with a bohemian touch
Pull a few strands of hair on either side of your face to soften the look. You could apply a flower or other decorative hair accessory right above the bun. Set everything together with a splash of medium hold hairspray.
Method 3 of 3: Bun with Braids
Step 1. Determine where you want to part your hair
This hairstyle looks great with the side parting, or just over halfway if you're feeling ready for a peasant look. Brush your hair well, then run the tip of the comb along the line to keep it straight and neat.
Step 2. Separate the side hair from the back hair
You will only weave the side parts, while the hair behind the head will not be braided. Gather your hair at the temples and let it fall over your shoulders. Brush your hair well behind your head to keep it separate from others.
The size of the braids will be directly proportional to the size of the side sections. If you want small, fine braids, part with strands of just one and a half centimeters apart on each side. To have, instead, big braids in true peasant style, calculate the dimensions between two and a half centimeters and five centimeters
Step 3. Gather the hair at the nape of the neck into a ponytail
Remember to leave the side strands out. Tie the ponytail at the height where you want to place your bun, at the nape of the neck or slightly higher. Make sure the elastic is tight enough to hold the hairstyle.
Step 4. Wrap the tail around the elastic and secure the tips with bobby pins
You're making the base of your bun, so make sure it's secure. The bun should cover the elastic and fit snugly against the head.
Step 5. Braid the right side of your hair
Start braiding at the right temple and make a neat braid up to the tip of the hair.
Step 6. Wrap the end of the braid around the base of the bun
The braid must adhere well to the head and pass just behind the tip of the ear up to the chignon. Snap the tip over the base of the chignon and continue wrapping it to the end. Use a bobby pin to lock the end of the braid.
Step 7. Braid the left side of the hair
Start braiding at the left temple and make a neat braid up to the tip of the hair.
Step 8. Wrap the end of the braid around the base of the bun
The braid must adhere well to the head and pass just below the tip of the ear up to the chignon. Snap the tip over the base of the chignon and continue wrapping it to the end. Use a bobby pin to lock the end of the braid.
Step 9. Apply hair spray to set the hairstyle
To keep the braids from loosening, use a strong hold hairspray.
