Glasses are often expensive, so it's important to keep them in top condition. Fortunately, cleaning them is a quick and easy task. The best way is to use warm water and dish soap, then go to the sink and lather them up! When in a hurry, apply spray cleaner or wet wipes to your lenses. If you get used to cleaning them every day, you will see flawlessly and they will always be shiny and like new.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Use Warm Water and Dishwashing Liquid
Step 1. Wash your hands before cleaning your glasses
Rub them with mild soap and warm water for 20 seconds. Before cleaning, you need to get rid of all the grease and dirt that has accumulated on the skin.
Step 2. Rinse them with warm water
Gently run tap water over your glasses. Turn them so that both sides of the lenses, the frame and the temples are wet.
Hot water damages the lenses, protective coatings, and frames, so make sure it's lukewarm
Step 3. Use your fingertips to thoroughly lather your glasses with dish soap
Add a small drop on each lens. Make sure it's neutral. Make small circular movements with your fingertips in order to lather both sides of the lenses, around the frame and on each temple.
Step 4. Clean the nose pads with a cotton swab or soft toothbrush
Apply light pressure as you rub the nosepads and the gaps between the nosepads and the frame. If you use a toothbrush, make sure it has soft bristles.
Do not scrub the lenses with a toothbrush, even if it has soft bristles. If you see any residue between the lenses and the frame, use a cotton swab to remove it
Step 5. Wash off the soap residue
Put the glasses back under running water to get rid of the foam. Make sure you have removed all traces of detergent, otherwise they may leave streaks.
Step 6. Shake them to remove excess water and make sure the lenses are clean
Turn off the tap, then take a look at the glasses. Check them to make sure you have degreased them and wash them again if you see any streaks.
Step 7. Dry them with a microfiber cloth
Take a clean microfiber cloth and fold it by wrapping a lens. Dry it in circular motions using your fingertips gently, then repeat with the other lens. Pass it on the nose pads, then on the frame and temples.
Method 2 of 3: Clean Your Glasses When You Are Short on Time
Step 1. Spray them with spray eyeglass cleaner
You can find it in pharmacies and at an optical shop. If you can't use running water and dish soap, spray a generous amount of spray cleaner to get rid of dirt and scale.
- Some opticians offer their customers free samples of eyeglass spray cleaner;
- If your lenses are anti-reflective, make sure the cleaner is suitable for the coating they are made of.
Step 2. Wipe with a microfiber cloth
After spraying your glasses, carefully remove the excess cleaner. Fold the cloth on both sides of each lens and absorb the traces of the product with small circular motions between the fingertips. Then, use the cloth on the frame and temples.
Step 3. Touch up the lenses with disposable eyeglass wipes
You can also clean them with wet wipes when you're in a hurry. Gently blow them out to remove dust and grime, then gently rub them with a wipe in small circular motions. After cleaning them, dry them with a microfiber cloth.
Use only wet wipes produced specifically for cleaning glasses. If your lenses are anti-reflective, make sure they are suitable for the coating they are made of
Method 3 of 3: Daily Maintenance
Step 1. Clean your glasses every morning and as needed
Incorporate eyeglass cleaning into your morning habits. Check them regularly throughout the day and touch up as needed.
If you keep your lenses clean and streak-free, they will be less easily scratched
Step 2. Store your glasses in a hard case when not in use
Do not throw them in your bag or briefcase and avoid placing the lenses on hard surfaces. When you're not using them, keep them in a hard case with the right capacity. If it's too big, they could move around inside and get damaged.
Step 3. Wash your microfiber cloths frequently
Microfiber cloths collect grease and dirt, so you should wash them after using them 2-3 times. Some are machine washable, so read the washing instructions on the label and clean them as indicated.
If the fabric is not machine washable or you are unsure, hand wash it with dish soap, wring it out and let it air dry
Step 4. Do not clean the glasses with the shirt, tissues or paper towels
Sweaters, tissues, and paper towels contain residues so fine that they could scratch the lenses. Also, never rub them when they are dry, otherwise they can get damaged easily.
