Do you like taking long relaxing baths but hate all the chemicals in the products available on the market? You can make a bubble bath using a few ingredients, many of which you probably already have on hand. Creating a bubble bath allows you to customize it as you wish, so that it meets your needs. This article will help you find out how to do it and will also give you some recipes to inspire you. In any case, keep in mind that a homemade bubble bath may not produce the same foam as the ones you bought.
Ingrediants
Ingredients for a bubble bath
Sufficient for 2 baths
- 120ml of a mild liquid hand or body soap
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1 egg white
- 1 tablespoon of sweet almond oil (optional)
- 5 drops of essential oil (optional)
Ingredients for a Vegan Bubble Bath
Sufficient for 6 baths
- 350 ml of castile liquid soap, scented or not
- 2 tablespoons of vegetable glycerin
- ½ tablespoon of white sugar
- 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional)
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Prepare the bubble bath
Step 1. Choose a soap and pour it into the bowl
Soap is the basis of any self-respecting shower gel. After all, it is this ingredient that creates the foam. You will need 120ml of any liquid hand or body soap, as long as it is mild. You can choose one that is scented or with no added fragrances. If you use the latter, you can customize the aroma later with essential oils. Don't have liquid hand or body soaps? Here are some other options:
- Dish soap, whether scented or not;
- Liquid Castile soap, scented or not;
- Mild shampoo, such as that for children.
Step 2. Pour some honey into the bowl
This ingredient not only smells sweet, it also helps moisturize the skin. You will need 1 tbsp. Make sure it's clear and liquid.
Step 3. You could add some oil
If you have very dry skin, you can pour 1 tablespoon of sweet almond oil. You do not have it? Replace it with one of the following ingredients:
- Olive oil;
- Coconut oil;
- Jojoba oil;
- Honey.
Step 4. Pour an egg white into the bowl
You may find it odd to use this ingredient to make a bubble bath, but it will allow you to create a softer and more lasting foam. To make an egg white, you must first divide it from the yolk, then add it to the rest of the ingredients. Here's how you can separate the egg white from the yolk:
Break an egg and let the yolk settle into one of the shell halves. Keep both halves of the shell on a bowl as you flip the yolk from side to side. Each time the yolk enters one half of the shell, a little egg white will drip into the bowl. Repeat until you have allowed all the egg white to drain into the bowl. You can throw the yolk away or keep it and use it for something else, like cooking or making a hair mask
Step 5. You could add some essential oils
While taking a bath, if you want to take advantage of the benefits of aromatherapy, pour 5 drops of your favorite essential oil into the water. The bubble bath will have a divine smell and will help you relax after a long day. Here are some great bath oils:
- Chamomile;
- Lavender;
- Pink geranium;
- Sandalwood;
- Vanilla.
Step 6. Mix all the ingredients
Once you have poured them into a bowl, mix them gently. Don't mix too much, or the soap and egg white will start to harden and lather.
Step 7. Pour the ingredients into a container
You can store the bubble bath in any container you want, as long as you can seal it tightly. You can use glass jars, glass bottles with screw caps or cork.
- You could create a label for the container.
- Embellish the container with a ribbon or decorate it with sticky gems.
Step 8. Store the bubble bath properly
Contains egg white, so it is perishable. After using it, put it back in the refrigerator and try to use it within a few days.
Part 2 of 4: Making a Vegan Bubble Bath
Step 1. Consider making a vegan bubble bath
The egg whites allow the bubble baths to maintain a thick and foamy consistency, while the honey helps moisturize the skin. However, they are not absolutely necessary to create this product. It is however possible to make it without. Read this section to find out how.
Step 2. Find a container to mix the ingredients
You can use a saucepan, bowl, or even jar to mix them all. You will then transfer them to another container.
Step 3. Pour the soap into the bowl
You will need 350ml of castile liquid soap. It can be scented or not. If you choose the latter, you can customize its aroma later with essential oils. Don't have Castile soap? You can use other liquid soaps or shampoos, but remember that they too should be made with vegan ingredients, such as olive oil. Here are some options:
- Mild unscented dish soap;
- Shampoo for children or in any case delicate;
- Liquid hand soap, whether scented or not;
- Liquid soap for the body, scented or not.
Step 4. Add the glycerin and sugar
Measure 2 tablespoons of vegetable glycerin and ½ tablespoon of sugar. Pour both into the bowl. The sugar and glycerin help create a nice lather and make it last longer.
Remember that the bubble bath will not create the same full-bodied and fluffy foam as a purchased product
Step 5. You could perfume it with essential oils
They are not necessary, but they can help you make the bathroom more fragrant, pleasant and relaxing thanks to aromatherapy. Here are some ideas:
- Chamomile;
- Lavender;
- Pink geranium;
- Sandalwood;
- Vanilla.
Step 6. Mix all the ingredients
Using a fork or spoon, mix them gently. Don't over-mix, or the soap will start to lather.
Step 7. Pour the ingredients into an airtight container
Pour the mixture into an airtight container; if you can, use a funnel. You can use any airtight container: glass jars, glass bottles with screw caps or corks.
- Personalize the bubble bath container by creating a label.
- Embellish it by decorating it with sticky gems or a ribbon.
- Glycerin may settle on the bottom of the container. This is normal, in fact it is heavier than soap and water. Just shake the bottle or jar lightly before using the bubble bath.
Step 8. Let the bubble bath rest before using it
You will have to wait for 24 hours before using the product. This ensures that the mixture takes on the right consistency.
Part 3 of 4: Other Recipes for Making a Bubble Bath
Step 1. Add a touch of sweetness with some vanilla and honey
Vanilla and honey bubble baths are quite popular. Understanding why is easy. In fact, they combine the sweetness of honey and vanilla extract. In addition, this recipe also involves the use of sweet almond oil, so it is rich and nutritious. Here's what you'll need:
- 120 ml of sweet almond oil;
- 120 ml of mild liquid hand or body soap;
- 60 ml of honey;
- 1 egg white;
- 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract.
Step 2. Add the lavender to the bubble bath
In the bottle, you can put some dried lavender. This ingredient makes the product have a relaxing fragrance and creates a colored foam. Here's what you'll need to make it:
- 250 ml of clear, fragrance-free dish soap;
- 160 ml of liquid glycerin;
- 4 tablespoons of water;
- 2 teaspoons of salt;
- 5-15 drops of your favorite essential oil (you could use an aroma that goes well with lavender);
- Several sprigs of dried lavender.
Step 3. Make a sweet, citrusy bubble bath
You can create one that reminds you of the smell of orange ice cream by mixing a soap and an extract with citrus notes. After mixing all the ingredients, you will need to let the mixture rest for 24 hours before using it. Here's what you'll need:
- 120 ml of Castile soap (you could use an orange flavored one);
- 60 ml of distilled water;
- 60 ml of glycerin;
- 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar;
- 1 tablespoon of orange extract;
- 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract.
Step 4. You could mix some essential oils
Try creating your own aroma by combining some essential oils and pouring them into the bubble bath bottle. Be sure to stir the mixture before using it, so that all the oils are well combined. Here are some blends.
- Lavender and lemon: 5 drops of lavender, 4 drops of lemon and 1 drop of chamomile.
- Citrus-floral aroma: 5 drops of bergamot, 4 drops of orange and 1 drop of pink geranium, ylang ylang or jasmine.
- Lavender and spices: 5 drops of lavender, 4 drops of patchouli or sandalwood, 1 drop of cloves (not recommended for sensitive skin).
- Pink dream: 3 drops of damask rose, 2 drops of palmarosa, 1 drop of pink geranium.
- Fresh and regenerating blend: 5 drops of eucalyptus, 5 drops of peppermint.
- Relaxing Lavender Blend: 5 drops of lavender, 5 drops of bergamot.
- Calming Rose Blend: 6 drops of lavender, 3 drops of geranium, 3 drops of rose.
Part 4 of 4: Using the bubble bath
Step 1. Start filling the tub with water
Stop the tub and start running the water. Choose the temperature according to your preferences. Let the water run for a few minutes. For now, don't fill the whole tub.
Step 2. Pour the bubble bath as the water flows into the tub
Measure about 60 ml of product. Make sure you pour it under running water - this helps the mixture create the foam. You should see a rich, full-bodied lather forming.
Step 3. Fill the tub however you like
Let the water run until it reaches the desired depth. Remember: the deeper the water, the longer it will retain heat.
Step 4. If necessary, shake the water
To be able to create an even softer foam, put your hand in the water and quickly move it from one side of the tub to the other. Don't worry if you pick up splashes. After a while you will see that the foam will begin to be more full-bodied.
However, keep in mind that a homemade bubble bath doesn't create the same lather as a bought one
Step 5. Enter the tub and immerse yourself
Lean against the wall of the tub and sit in the water. You can read a book or just close your eyes and relax. Enjoy your bubble bath for approximately 20-30 minutes.
Advice
- Create a relaxing atmosphere by listening to some music.
- Turn off the bathroom lights and light a few candles for a more relaxing effect.
- Do something relaxing in the bathtub, like meditating, reading a book, or even getting a pedicure.
- Remember that most bubble baths do not generate the same amount of foam as those you can buy at the grocery store or perfumery. This is due to the lack of surfactants, which are responsible for creating soap bubbles and foam.
Warnings
- Being submerged for too long dries the skin.
- If you light candles, keep an eye on them. Do not leave them unattended.
- Don't lock the bathroom door, because if you slip, fall or get hurt, someone can help you.
- If you are a woman, remember that bubble baths can cause vaginal irritation.
- If you are pregnant, avoid taking a foam filled or hot bath. This could cause complications.
