Pastillas, or pastillas de leche, are a sweet and sugary dessert that is well known and loved by many people in the Philippines. You can make this dessert without cooking it at all, or by cooking a little to make this treat. If you want to know how to make pastillas, read Step 1 below to get started.
Ingrediants
- 2 cups of powdered milk
- 1 can (400 ml) of condensed milk
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 1 tablespoon of margarine
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Making Uncooked Pastillas
Step 1. Pour the powdered milk and condensed milk into a bowl
Pour 2 cups of powdered milk and 1 can (400 ml) of condensed milk into a bowl. With this recipe you should get around 80 candies.
Step 2. Mix the powdered and condensed milk
The mixture can be a bit thick and difficult to mix, so be patient and use a thick, sturdy spoon.
Step 3. Add margarine to the mixture
Add 1 tablespoon of margarine to the mixture; you could replace margarine with butter. This will help add a creamy flavor to the treat. Mix with the other ingredients.
Step 4. Shape the candies into balls or cylinders
Choose the shape you want for your pastillas: they can be circular, or more cylindrical in shape. Use your hands to give them the shape you want; you can wear food gloves if you want. Arrange the molded candies on a plate.
Step 5. Pour the sugar onto a plate
Pour half a cup of sugar onto a plate.
Step 6. Roll the pastillas in sugar
Make sure all parts are covered.
Step 7. Wrap the pastillas in cellophane
You can cut the cellophane in advance to make the shape you want. Then put the pastillas in cellophane and wrap the ends of the plastic.
Step 8. Serve them
Put the candies on a tray and enjoy them. You can use them as a dessert or serve them as a snack whenever you want.
Method 2 of 2: Cook the Pastillas
Step 1. Mix the condensed milk, milk powder and sugar in a saucepan
Be careful to mix the ingredients thoroughly as you heat them until they form a dough.
Step 2. Bring the mixture to a boil
Step 3. Add the butter
Keep mixing the ingredients thoroughly.
Step 4. Remove from heat
Remove the saucepan from the stove and move the mixture you cooked into a bowl. Let it cool for at least 5-10 minutes, until the dough is cold enough to touch, but still warm.
Step 5. Shape the dough
Use your hands or a knife to shape the mixture into bite-sized candies. You can give them a circular, cylindrical, cubic, or whatever shape you like. You should make about 80 pieces.
Step 6. Roll the candy lightly in sugar
Use your hands to make sure each piece is lightly but evenly covered in sugar.
Step 7. Wrap the candies in cellophane
Place each piece of candy in the center of a cellophane square, wrap the plastic in a cylindrical shape or whatever you like, and roll up the ends.
Step 8. Serve them
Enjoy these tasty candies at any time of the day.
