Proprioceptive tablets are becoming increasingly popular and are used to develop torso strength and balance. By standing on an unstable surface, you will develop balance and related brain functions. If you don't have € 100 to spend, you can build your own!
Steps
Step 1. Determine the size of the tablet to build
It depends on how tall you are. The board must be long enough to keep the legs apart and shoulder-width apart. Also, it needs to be wide enough to fit your feet inside. 85 x 35 cm should be fine.
Step 2. Purchase a 2cm thick piece of plywood that is large enough to cut to the required measurements
Also, buy a thick PVC or ABS pipe with a diameter of 12-18cm. It must be long enough to cover the entire width of the board and strong enough to support your weight.
Step 3. Cut the plywood and pipe as needed
Step 4. Using the plywood scraps, cut 2 pieces 5cm wide and 35cm long
Step 5. Use these two pieces by pinning them along the ends of the board at the bottom
Use them only for safety, if you think you are hurting yourself. They will help keep the tube from slipping under the board when you are balancing.
Step 6. Place the tube on the ground and place the tablet on it
Wear a helmet, cuffs, knee pads and elbow pads. Only use them if you think you can hurt yourself. Get on the tablet carefully (using a chair or leaning on someone's shoulder) and test your balance!
Step 7. Finished
Advice
- While at the hardware store, buy some electrical tape or plastic window sealer. Use it around the pipe to make it adhere better to the ground. You will get more friction.
- Use it around the tube along the two ends. You can also add a stripe in the center. Make sure they are all the same thickness.
- Make sure you use a THICK tube. PVC pipes are usually thicker than ABS pipes.
- Drill holes before using screws suitable for wood.
Warnings
- Don't use the tablet by going beyond your skill limits.
- The PVC tube will rotate under the tablet but will not go further thanks to the blocks fixed on the ends. Be careful with your movements as the tablet may separate from the tube.
- Always wear safety gear when using your proprioceptive tablet.
- Use it only in open spaces. Make sure there is enough space to fall safely.
