Steps
Step 1. Feed him the right way
Labrador Retrievers have a large appetite. Don't be surprised if your dog is constantly hungry. Indicatively, you should feed him one to two times a day. However, it is always best to ask your vet for advice on how many times a day to feed your dog (treats included!)
- To prevent him from gaining weight, walk with him daily; at least thirty minutes a day. Labradors love to socialize with others; if you have a park near your home, get your dog familiar with the place. To prevent it from straying, it is better to keep it on a leash, especially if you have taken it with you for a short time; Labradors are extremely curious dogs.
- Don't worry too much if he's constantly hungry. You can offer him a tidbit during the day and then give him a little less to eat during meals. As previously mentioned, ask your veterinarian for advice on the amount of food and frequency of meals to give to your dog.
Step 2. Surround him with love
Labradors are particularly affectionate but also territorial dogs. It is natural for them to bark at anything they see on the street. When they are properly educated, however, they are not so ferocious, especially towards people they already know. At home, take some time to prepare your dog for what awaits him on the street. Get him in contact with people you know and other animals.
Labradors are great with children. However, if you have small children, always pay close attention to how they behave around the dog. Toddlers love to grab anything that comes their way, so be careful your child doesn't grab the dog, or he might get bitten. If you recently got the dog, be especially cautious. It may take some time for the dog to get used to the baby (and vice versa). Labradors love to play with anyone who is willing to spend time with them. You will find that they love cuddles and are excellent watchdogs. However, you must always remember who the owner is, treating the dog as you would like to be treated in his place. Step 3. Play with your dog
Caress him, play with him, show him other people! If there is one thing that Labradors love more than food, it is seeing new things and people every day. If your Labrador seems oddly lazy or sad, pet him more than usual, play with him more often, and take him for a walk. These dogs are very fond of exploring places they don't yet know. While exploring, you will notice a noticeable change in your dog's attitude! Remember, Labradors are very curious dogs!
If you want a happy dog, let him sniff around when you take him for a walk. When you get home, let him smell you, so that he can smell the smells you carry with you
Step 4. If he feels like snuggling up next to you, maybe on a Saturday night in front of the TV, don't deny him
All dogs love to be close to their owners: they grow up in packs, and are therefore used to physical contact. If you can, let him get on the sofa.
Step 5. Provide him with lots of toys
Labradors are very fond of playing. Often their favorite toy is a simple tennis ball.
Step 6. Always provide him with fresh water
Labradors, after some exercise, are always very thirsty and need to drink.
Advice
- If you have puppies around the house, make sure they have plenty of space to play and do their business.
- Make sure you have enough space in the house for your puppy, as it is undesirable for him to be out alone at night.
