Newts and frogs can make excellent pets, are easy to manage and don't need a lot of care. You can find them in the wild if you can't get them at your local pet store.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Finding Tritons or Frogs
Step 1. Wait for the end of summer period
This is the best time of the year to look for the little frogs that have recently developed after being tadpoles.
Firebelly newts are easier to find on a rainy day or just after a rainy day, as they love a gloomy environment
Step 2. Make sure you know for sure which type of frog or newt you want to catch
Knowing this will give you a better idea of where to look for these amphibians. For example, if the newt or frog like to stay on land, you will probably find them on the damp shores of a lake, under rocks and under piles of leaves, while, if they are aquatic, they are usually inside the lake itself.
Step 3. If you can access the lake easily, and it's not too deep, try moving the rocks off the lake bed
This is the place where amphibians like to hide. Try to move slowly so they don't run away; they can be very fast.
Part 2 of 2: Handling Tritons or Frogs
Step 1. When you find your newt try not to hold it in your hand for too long, you should have a container with you to store it while you take it home
Step 2. Once you get home, place your pet in a suitable environment for him that you hopefully prepared before you go hunting
Make sure some items you put in the container are literally from the old frog / newt habitat. For example, if your new pet lived in a pond, you should put some water and soil that comes from the pond into its new environment.
Advice
- Frogs are found on the banks of ponds or streams.
- Newts stay very close to water because they are mostly aquatic.
- Hunting amphibians in ponds located in the woods will give you more luck. Shady places help keep frogs cool and well hidden.
- If you go hunting at night, grab a flashlight and look around. The frogs are mesmerized by the light.
Warnings
- Frogs jump quickly, so you may not see them.
- The ground around ponds can be very muddy and slippery. Be careful as you may slip or trip.
