Getting waxed at a beauty salon can be expensive! To overcome this problem, you can prepare a sugar wax with three simple ingredients and shave yourself at home. All you need is some common white sugar, lemon juice and water. Sugar waxing makes hair removal less painful than traditional hot waxing, making it an excellent option for all women or men who have sensitive skin.
Ingrediants
- 200 g of white granulated sugar
- 60ml lemon juice (preferably packaged one)
- 60 ml of hot water
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Making the Sugar Wax
Step 1. First, place a medium-sized saucepan on the stove
While you will get a moderate amount of waxing with these doses (roughly enough for leg hair removal), it is best to use a large pot. The mixture forms large bubbles when heated and can overflow if you use a saucepan that is too small.
Step 2. Pour the granulated sugar, lemon juice, and hot water into the pot
Weigh the sugar and pour it into the pot, then add the lemon juice and hot water. Finally, mix the ingredients to mix them.
If you want, you can replace the white granulated sugar with brown sugar, but don't use the icing sugar, otherwise waxing won't work
Step 3. Bring the mixture to a boil using high heat
Turn on the stove and wait for the ingredients to start boiling, taking care to mix them often. Don't stray from the kitchen as the mixture will start bubbling brightly when it boils.
Be careful not to burn the sugar. If this happens, the wax will completely solidify once cooled, becoming unusable
Step 4. Reduce the heat to a medium level
When the mixture starts to boil, turn the heat down. Keep stirring frequently and check that the sugar has completely dissolved in the water.
If the wax continues to boil briskly even after you turn the heat down, reduce the heat further
Step 5. Remove the pot from the stove when the mixture turns amber
Keep stirring as it simmers, waiting for it to reach a smooth texture and amber tone. Then turn off the heat and move the pot to a cold stove.
The consistency should be reminiscent of that of hot sugar syrup. If the density is more like that of honey, leave the wax on the heat a little longer
Step 6. Pour the wax into a boule or glass jar and let it cool for 30 minutes
Unlike the traditional one, this wax should not be used hot. Transfer it to a heat-resistant container and wait at least half an hour to make sure it's hot, but not hot. If it still feels too hot to safely apply to your skin, let it cool down a little longer before starting hair removal.
Part 2 of 2: Apply the Sugar Wax
Step 1. Take a small amount of wax with your fingers
By now it should have reached a temperature that allows you to easily touch it and use your fingers for the whole process. Take it out of the container and shape it in your hands to give it the shape of a ball.
If you prefer, you can use a butter knife or wooden waxing spatula instead of your fingers
Step 2. Apply the wax to a small strip of skin
You can spread it on the body with your fingers, with the spatula or with the butter knife. Remember that it should be applied in the opposite direction to where the hair grows. Spread it evenly creating a layer about 5-6 millimeters thick. Work in small areas that are a few centimeters wide and long.
This amount of ingredients should give you enough wax to shave both legs
Step 3. Now take a deep breath and pull
Make sure you have a firm grip on the wax and pull it in the opposite direction to where the hair grows. It must be a quick gesture, equivalent to what you would do to peel a patch from the skin. You may feel some pain!
- You can also roll or remove the wax slowly with your fingers, but in that case you will only prolong the pain. It is best to make a single quick tear.
- If you want you can spread a strip of paper on the wax, press it well with your hands and pull the paper directly.
Step 4. Continue waxing small sections of skin until you are done
You can reuse the same portion of wax even 3 or 4 times or you can take a new one from the container each time.
Step 5. Transfer the leftover wax to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator
If you haven't used it all, select a suitable container for storing it, such as a sturdy plastic container with a lid, then pour the wax into it and store it in the refrigerator. You will need to use it within 4-5 weeks, warming it up before use.
