Whenever you use heat to style your hair, using for example an iron, flat iron or heat curlers, you can cause great damage. The sprays that protect them from heat and other harmful agents make sure that they are not the ones who burn and spoil. You can buy one of the many products available in perfumery or at the supermarket or you can create an equally effective spray by following one of the recipes in the article to know exactly what it contains. As you continue reading, you will discover that you already have many of the necessary ingredients available.
Ingrediants
Simple Protective Spray
- 180 ml of distilled water
- 24-36 drops of avocado oil
Protective Spray with Conditioner
- 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, liquid
- Balm
- 240 ml of distilled water
- 4 drops of almond oil
Protective Spray with Essential Oils
- 1 teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon of sweet almond oil
- 2 teaspoons of conditioner
- 240 ml of distilled water
- 5 drops of clary sage essential oil
- 5 drops of geranium essential oil
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Create a Simple Protective Spray
Step 1. Pour the water into a bottle with a spray dispenser
You can mix the ingredients directly inside the bottle that you will use to apply the protective spray to the hair. First, pour 180ml of distilled (or filtered) water into it. Since water is heavier than oil, it is important to put it in the bottle first to make it blend better.
You can use a plastic or glass bottle. Before you start, make sure it can hold at least 210ml of liquid
Step 2. Add the avocado oil
After pouring the water into the bottle, add 24 to 36 drops of avocado oil. Adjust the amount according to the needs of your hair: use more if it is thick and frizzy or less if it is thin.
- The ratio of oil to water should be 4-6 drops of oil per 30ml of water. You can increase or decrease the doses respecting this ratio to prepare a smaller or larger amount of protective spray.
- You can use a different oil if you don't have avocado oil available, such as sunflower, argan or macadamia oil.
Step 3. Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients
After adding the oil to the water, shake the spray bottle vigorously to make sure they blend. They may separate over time, but just shake the bottle again before each use.
Step 4. Apply the spray to your hair before styling
When it's time to use a blow dryer, straightener or curling iron, spray the spray on the lengths and ends. Distribute it along the strands by combing them with your fingers or a comb for even protection. At this point you can use your styling tools without fear of severely damaging your hair.
This spray can be applied indiscriminately on damp or dry hair
Method 2 of 3: Create a Protective Spray with Conditioner
Step 1. Fill a spray bottle with water
Pour 240ml of distilled water into a bottle with a spray nozzle. Make sure there is 5cm of empty space left.
You can use a plastic or glass bottle
Step 2. Add coconut oil and almond oil
After pouring the water into the bottle, add a tablespoon of coconut oil (it must be liquid, so heat it if it has solidified due to the low temperature) and 4 drops of almond oil. The ideal is to use a dropper to pour the two oils into the bottle without the risk of spilling them.
If you prefer, you can substitute almond oil with grapeseed or argan oil
Step 3. Add conditioner
After shaking the bottle to mix the water and oil, pour a 1-euro amount of conditioner into the palm of your hand. Carefully transfer it to the bottle along with the other ingredients.
You can use any conditioner as long as it contains silicones. It is precisely the silicones that will create a protective coating on the hair
Step 4. Shake the bottle to mix all the ingredients
After pouring them one at a time into the spray bottle, mix them by shaking it vigorously. They may separate over time, but just shake the bottle again before each use.
Shaking the ingredients may cause foam to form inside the bottle. This is normal, after a while the spray will acquire a liquid and milky consistency
Step 5. Apply the protective spray to your hair before styling
When it's time to style them, place the nozzle about 15 cm away from your head and spray the product evenly into your hair. Distribute it on the lengths and ends by combing them with your fingers, then use the hair dryer, straightener or curling iron as usual.
Method 3 of 3: Create a Protective Spray with Essential Oils
Step 1. Pour half of the water into a bottle with a spray nozzle
Make sure the selected bottle can hold at least 300ml of liquid. Start making your protective spray by pouring 120ml of distilled water into the bottle.
Since you will be using essential oils, the bottle must be glass. This is because essential oils deteriorate more quickly in contact with plastic
Step 2. Add all other ingredients
After pouring half the required amount of distilled water into the bottle, add one tablespoon of fractionated coconut oil, one tablespoon of sweet almond oil and two teaspoons of conditioner. Finally add 5 drops of clary sage essential oil and 5 drops of geranium essential oil.
You can use the conditioner you usually use to moisturize your hair after shampooing
Step 3. Finally add the remaining water and shake the bottle
When all the other ingredients are in the spray bottle, add the remaining 120ml of distilled water. Shake the bottle vigorously to mix the entire contents.
Shake the bottle again if the ingredients separate between uses
Step 4. Apply the spray to your hair
Spray it in one spot and then distribute it by combing your hair with your fingers or a comb. Continue like this until you have applied it all over. Finally, use the hair dryer, straightener or curling iron as usual.
Advice
- Never use a hair dryer, straightener, heat rollers or curling iron without first applying a protective spray to your hair to prevent heat damage.
- Styling tools can ruin your hair despite using a protective spray. For this reason it is best to use them once or twice a week at the most.
