Measuring the length of a dress is useful for anyone who plans to sell it online. Measurements are also useful for those who want to make sure a dress is the right size before buying it. Determining the length of a suit is easy: all you need is a measuring tape and a flat surface. Based on the measurements you can then understand if it is a mini dress, knee-length or long.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Measure the Length of the Dress
Step 1. Spread the dress on the floor or counter
Smooth it with your hands to flatten it as much as possible, facing the front of the dress upwards. Make sure any ruffles or details on the bottom and straps are flat.
Step 2. Place the measuring tape on the top strap (if the dress has straps)
Take a tape measure and place one end on top of one of the straps.
Step 3. Measure the dress from top to bottom edge
Extend the tape measure horizontally from the top of the strap to the bottom hem. Notice where the bottom edge of the dress matches the measuring tape and make a note of the measurement.
- If the dress has sleeves, measure from the shoulder seam to the bottom hem of the dress.
- Most of the dresses have a minimum length of 75cm and a maximum length of 1.6m.
Step 4. If the dress is strapless, put it on and measure it from the crook of the neck
Strapless dresses must be worn to be measured. Place one end of the measuring tape in the center of the collarbones and then extend it to the bottom hem of the dress to get the right fit.
Ask someone to help you keep the tape steady
Part 2 of 2: Identify the Type of Dress
Step 1. Observe if the length of the dress is between 75 and 90 cm
If the total length of the dress falls within these measurements, it is a short dress that will come to the top or middle of the thigh. This model is called a "minidress".
Step 2. Check if the dress is between 90 and 100cm in length
Such a dress, also called a "cocktail dress", tends to go to the knee or slightly above.
This type of dress can arrive at different points of the knees according to the height of the person wearing it
Step 3. See if the dress is between 100 and 115cm in length
This model, called a midi, falls just below the knee or reaches up to the calves.
Step 4. See if the dress is between 140 and 160cm long
This type of model, called a maxi dress, is quite long and reaches the ankles or the floor.
