Going to a spa is relaxing, but it can be expensive. However, you have the opportunity to recreate soothing and exfoliating treatments worthy of a beautician from the comfort of your home. From creamy scrubs, which are easy to make, to exfoliating bars, which take longer, there is a wide variety of scrubs. Try making them at home and share the benefits of these treatments with your friends.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Use a Food Based Scrub
Step 1. Make a coffee scrub
Coffee grounds are a natural exfoliant and caffeine can help fight cellulite. You can use freshly ground coffee or recycle the coffee grounds from the day before. For this recipe, you'll need 1 cup (240ml) of coconut oil, half a cup (100g) of sugar, 30g of coffee grounds and 2 tablespoons (30ml) of olive oil.
Mix the ingredients in a medium-sized bowl and then store the scrub in an airtight jar
Step 2. Make a banana scrub
It is another useful method for reducing food waste and making the skin more radiant than ever. It is also an inexpensive scrub that does not require the use of oil. Just mix these ingredients:
- 1 ripe banana;
- 3 tablespoons of sugar;
- 20 drops of vanilla extract or essential oil of your choice (optional).
Step 3. Use the tomatoes
Tomatoes have excellent cooling properties and are especially good for the skin after long exposure to the sun. For this recipe, use ripe tomatoes. Choose the ones that are now unusable in the kitchen. You will need: 1 1/2 cups (300 g) of sugar, 1 tomato, 180 ml of oil, 3-5 drops of your favorite essential oil, such as lemongrass (optional).
- Chop the tomato as finely as possible and then mix the ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Store the scrub in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge.
- Do not keep it for more than a week, or it will begin to ferment. Store it in the freezer if you decide to prepare larger quantities.
Step 4. Make an oat scrub
Oats have excellent exfoliating properties for the skin. With this blend of oats, sugar and coconut oil, you will feel it regenerated. This recipe allows you to make large amounts of scrubs, which will last you for about 6 months. You will need 1 cup (240 ml) of coconut oil, half a cup (100 g) of brown sugar and half a cup (45 g) of rolled oats.
- Mix the ingredients by hand or using a food processor.
- Store the scrub in airtight containers.
- If you think you've done too much and can't use it all, it can be a great gift.
Step 5. Make a mango-based scrub
Mango has naturally refreshing and relaxing properties for the skin. This is a great way to create a true natural paradise in your shower. You will need 1/2 cup (100g) of sugar, 2 tablespoons (30ml) of coconut oil, 40g of shredded mango and 2-4 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional).
Use larger amounts of sugar for a thicker consistency
Method 2 of 3: Prepare a Sodium Bicarbonate Scrub
Step 1. Get everything you need
Baking soda is a very common all-purpose ingredient that you can use anywhere from toilet bowl to hair. Just buy it or look for it in the pantry.
Step 2. Prepare the pasta
All you have to do to make a baking soda paste is add some water. Fill a palm with baking soda and pour it into a bowl. Then, slowly incorporate the water, one tablespoon at a time.
- Add granulated sugar to make the exfoliating properties of this scrub more effective.
- Add 3-5 drops of witch hazel extract to make a scented scrub.
Step 3. Massage the paste into the skin
This process helps remove dead skin cells. Start at the feet and work your way up to the scalp. Rub the paste into your skin using your hands. You can apply it during the shower or before.
For best results, let the scrub sit on your skin for 2 minutes before rinsing it off
Step 4. Wash after treatment
Open the shower faucet and remove the scrub with water. It is not necessary to use soaps or sponges. Guide the action of water with your hands by massaging the skin.
This process should be delicate. If you want to make a deeper scrub, then use sugar, but always avoid aggressively treating the skin
Method 3 of 3: Make a Body Exfoliating Bar of Soap
Step 1. Prepare everything you need
This process requires more effort and more ingredients than the others. You will need:
- 85 g of shea butter;
- 60 g of cocoa butter;
- 15 g of ground azuki beans;
- 30 g of ground rice;
- 15 g of ground almonds;
- 10-15 drops of an essential oil of your choice.
Step 2. Grind the dry ingredients
If you haven't bought pre-ground beans, rice, and almonds, use a food processor or blender to reduce these ingredients to powder. Make sure you grind them as finely as possible.
Don't worry if some pieces aren't as fine as others. This way the soap will take on a grainy surface that will help exfoliate the skin
Step 3. Mix the butters
In a medium saucepan, mix the shea butter and cocoa butter. Adjust the heat to low and leave the butters on the heat only until they are well blended.
Step 4. Add the exfoliating ingredients
Mix the rice, almonds, and ground beans with the butters. Mix everything until you get a homogeneous mixture.
Step 5. Add the essential oil
This step depends solely and exclusively on your preferences. You could use a citrus-based oil, such as lemon or lemongrass, or herbal, such as eucalyptus or tea tree oil.
If you are familiar with essential oils and have a collection of them, try mixing them. For example, you could use lavender and tea tree essential oils
Step 6. Let the ingredients rest
Put the mixture in the freezer for about 20 minutes. This process will favor an even distribution of the exfoliating ingredients within the bar. The mixture should take on a dull color.
If you leave it in the freezer, it will thicken completely and will therefore be difficult to use
Step 7. Move the mixture into the molds with the help of a spoon
You can use any mold you have at home. Cookie cutters would be perfect. If you don't have these molds, you can use a muffin pan.
Step 8. Put the molds in the refrigerator
Place the molds in the fridge and wait for a few hours. When ready, the bars will immediately detach from the molds. Once they have thickened, you won't need to keep them in the refrigerator.
Step 9. Use the bar of soap in the shower
Use it as if it were a normal soap. After you have moistened your skin in the shower, gently massage the bar of soap. Once you have rubbed your skin, rinse it off.
