A veil can be made for a wedding, a special suit for a religious or similar event or for costume or mask reasons. There are various types of veil depending on the cultural background and the traditions that characterize it. Thanks to this article you will be able to create some, different from each other by type, before exploring further possibilities.
Steps
Method 1 of 6: Wedding Veil
This is a rather typical use for a veil, although not all brides use it. It is impossible to provide unique instructions for a wedding veil, as the variations are endless and beyond this simple veil it is advisable to shop around for the right model that fits the style of the wedding dress. The veil proposed below is a simple version in tulle decorated with ribbons, suitable for a wedding, a bachelorette party, a stage costume or a mask.
Step 1. Purchase the items needed to make the veil
They are listed below, in the "Things You Will Need" section.
Step 2. Iron the tulle
It must be perfect, so all creases and creases need to be ironed out. To do this:
- Lay the tulle on a flat surface like an ironing board or table. If using a table, spread towels underneath to protect the table surface.
- Place a thin towel over the tulle.
- Use a hot iron.
- Gently iron the tulle along its entire length and width.
- Keep the iron handy as you will need to reuse it.
Step 3. Fold the tulle in half lengthwise
When folding, match the outer edges.
Step 4. Cut out the outer corners of the folded tulle
Use a sharp pair of fabric scissors so you can cut out a curve from each corner.
Step 5. Open the veil
Then fold it widthwise. This crease should be about 55cm inside. from the front hem located in the lower part of the veil.
Gently iron the style with the hot iron
Step 6. Sew the veil from side to side
Use the gathering stitch on your sewing machine or do it by hand by sewing across the fold of the veil.
Step 7. Attach the edge of the ribbon:
- Spread the tape inside out. Line up the hem of the veil along the ribbon. The wrong side must remain in contact with the lower part of the veil.
- Sew along the inside edge of the ribbon to attach it.
- Continue around the outside edge of the veil.
- Secure the ribbon by folding it to the right side of the veil and sewing it along the opposite inner hem to secure it properly.
Step 8. Sew the ribbon to the part of the veil that covers the face
This step starts with the curl.
- Place the ribbon straight side over the previously attached ribbon.
- Sew on top.
- To arrange, twist the ends of the ribbon slightly underneath.
- At this point you have a satin ribbon that ties both sides of the tulle in the part of the veil that covers the face.
Step 9. Prepare the comb
The method is as follows:
- Starting with the second tooth, wrap the comb with a tape measure, side to side.
- Fold under the end neatly and cut out to accommodate.
- Hand sew the folded end to make sure it's secure.
Step 10. Stop the curl on the ribbon
Wrap it very tightly and tie the ends neatly. Secure the comb by hand sewing it over the taut curl.
Step 11. Decorate the veil
Hand sew bows and / or roses on the curl. Center them on the comb. You choose the composition.
You can add other decorations if you wish. For example, you can attach beads or sequins to the tulle. However, this will take longer to prepare the veil and the work will be quite meticulous
Method 2 of 6: Vintage Veil
Step 1. Consider making a veil
A veil can add an elegant touch of vintage-inspired style to your wedding attire. Relatively easy to do, it can be done in the weeks leading up to the ceremony. It is also a great choice for costumes and semi-formal wear.
Method 3 of 6: Cathedral Veil
Step 1. Make a long veil
This type of veil stretches across the floor for at least 6 inches, following the bride as she walks down the aisle. Although a large amount of fabric is required for the cathedral veil, it can be handcrafted by people who demonstrate skill in sewing. For instructions see "How to Make a Cathedral Veil".
Method 4 of 6: Repurpose a Family / Used Wedding Veil
In case you inherited your mother's veil or found a really interesting one at an auction or thrift store. The emphasis nowadays on repurposing used items to save is indicative of a sensible and likeable attitude to give a nod to the past and another chance to something that once liked.
Step 1. Check the condition of the veil
Is it clean or does it need repairs? For length, does it suit you as it is or should it be shortened or perhaps refined with the addition of a new, more modern layer?
Wash the old veils very carefully. Not only are veils naturally delicate, but old fabrics lose their strength over time. Usually a gentle hand wash in warm water with a very mild detergent is safe, but if the veil is dated, consult a fabric conservator for some good advice
Step 2. Decide whether to redecorate the veil
If you like the decorations on the veil, it might just be the case to embellish what is already there and check for any loose beads, etc. Conversely, if you are not thrilled with the existing decorations, carefully remove them from the seams and add whatever you like. Keep in mind once again that handling old fabrics carries the risk of tears, lost threads and weakening of the veil.
Style can be added by sewing glass beads, lace or ribbon bows / roses onto the veil. This job can take a few hours but it's worth it and you can say you've added your own personal touch
Step 3. In case you decide to trim the veil to shorten it, consider adding a ribbon or other type of hem to prevent further fraying of the fabric
Shortening a veil is a fairly simple procedure that requires only the most basic sewing skills and a steady hand that can cut straight.
Step 4. Finally, if you are feeling a little nervous about making changes to a family veil, ask a seamstress or tailor for help
Most of them will be more than willing to help you and are likely to cost you a lot less than buying a new veil.
Method 5 of 6: Simple Veil for a Costume or Bachelorette Party
A very simple veil can be prepared as follows and if it were to break during the event, at least it didn't take you forever to make it. Any color of tulle is suitable, but you may want to consider coordinating it with the party theme or costume.
Step 1. Purchase a wide comb and a large rectangle of tulle
Make sure you have enough tulle on hand to fold it in half. You will also need some basic DIY items, such as vinyl glue and scissors.
Step 2. Fold the tulle in half
It serves to give greater texture and effect.
Step 3. Gather the tulle at the fold
To do this, use a very simple running stitch; it is even easier if you use a wool thread or similar of the same color as the veil, rather than a cotton thread. Tie it to the other side with a strong knot and cut off the excess thread.
Step 4. Glue the curl to the comb
Let it solidify. If necessary, adjust the edges to fix everything before the glue is dry.
Step 5. Glue decorations if you use them
Easy-to-add decorations such as pre-made bows and sequins can be purchased in DIY stores.
Step 6. Put it on by putting the comb through your hair and letting the veil hang behind your head
Method 6 of 6: Mourning (or Funeral) Veil
Another good use of the veil is to cover your face when you want to express your grief in private during a public event. This type of veil is usually made in black to coordinate with the black funeral dress.
Step 1. Find a suitable black hat
You can also make a small crochet or knit headpiece. The ideal hat would be flat and low, or a fascinator.
If you have a suitable hat but not black, you can dye or paint it with fabric paint
Step 2. Cut a piece of black loose weave tulle or tulle
Cut it so that it is slightly longer than the length you want on the face (the excess will be attached to the hat). The degree of coverage around the head is completely up to you. Tulle can only fall on the face or go around the head. Cut it according to your preferences.
Step 3. Place the tulle or loose-weave tulle around the inner base hem of the hat
If you sew it to the hat, pin it in the chosen location, then sew it. Alternatively, use fabric glue to hold the tulle / mesh in place.
Step 4. Add a rose made from black ribbon or similar as a decoration
It can be sewn by hand or glued in the chosen position.
Advice
- The tulle will curl if the tension is not correct. Sew slowly as you attach the ribbon to the tulle and make sure there is the same tension for both the tulle and the ribbon. This will prevent the tulle from curling.
- Veils aren't ideal for all wedding dresses and aren't essential if you don't like them. Always check that the style of the dress allows for the use of the veil before deciding to wear one. For example, the style of a cocktail dress does not fit the veil, on the contrary it will look contrived and out of place.
