Sometimes bad weather (most of the time snow and ice storms during the school year) can be so dangerous that schools open a couple of hours later (to allow snow and ice to melt) or close all day (if bad weather continues during the day). Here are some basic tips to find out if your school is closed or not.

Step 1. Think hard before you do anything

Step 2. Find out if your school has a special emergency information line
Parents or students may be required to call this number for information on school day delays or cancellations. Since it comes directly from your school, this is the most reliable source of information. Most schools have a similar system, but check for safety before the next bad weather. You can also check the school's website (if it has one) for delay / cancellation notices.
Step 3. Check local information sites for school delays or cancellations
They should have a detailed list updated every few minutes with information from the last hour.
Step 4. Ask your mates
If nothing has worked so far, call a friend and ask if they have more information, but don't call too early in the morning.
Step 5. Watch the news or listen to local radio stations to see if your school is closed
Or go to that radio station's official website to find out if your school is on the list. If it is, then enjoy your day off!
Step 6. In case all else fails, prepare and go to school like on a normal day
If the parking lot is empty, the doors are sealed, etc., then the school is probably closed, but wait a bit. Maybe someone - a teacher or the principal - will come out to confirm closure.
Advice
- Remember that too many days of suspension could lead to an extension of the school year. While the weather is obviously not controllable, your school may not close due to minor weather events if it has already closed several times recently.
- Sometimes there are cases where inclement weather may or may not affect your area after the school day starts, and your school may let you out earlier. On days when snow or other types of bad weather are expected at any time of the day, make sure your parents are aware of the possible early closure of the school and you may need to be brought home earlier.
- Snow days are an excellent opportunity to catch up with studying or catch up on any backlogs / chores!
