While some people seem born with a beautiful innate voice, even professional singers have to work hard and practice often to maintain their singing skills. Read this article to learn how to become a better singer!
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Develop Your Voice
Step 1. Focus on the breath
Learning to breathe properly is essential to becoming a better singer. Make sure you take a deep breath before you start singing, so that you have enough breath to complete the passage.
- Breathe through your belly, not through your chest, which improves your sound and allows you to better control your voice. To make sure you are breathing correctly, place your hand on your stomach and check if it expands when you inhale.
- Take a few minutes each day to practice breathing through your belly. You can do this while standing or lying down. Again, make sure your belly rises every time you take a deep breath.
Step 2. Learn the proper posture for singing
Many singing teachers recommend standing rather than sitting in order to get a better sound. You should also do the following:
- Drop your jaw and keep your tongue relaxed towards the front of your mouth.
- Relax your shoulders.
- Lift the top of your tongue towards the back of your mouth, as if you are about to yawn. This allows the throat to be widened so that more air can pass through it.
Step 3. Warm up before singing
Singing a song does not count as a warm-up, as you will instinctively focus all your efforts on trying to get a good overall result, rather than on form and technique. Warming up, on the other hand, allows you to isolate certain problem areas.
- Remember that warming up is not about making nice sounds. In fact, most of those sounds will sound ridiculous and annoying, even if you have a professional voice. If you don't want to annoy others, find an isolated place where you can.
- Make sure you warm up both your upper and lower voices. The upper voice is higher than the lower one, which is more whispered. To find your superior voice, imitate an opera soprano.
Step 4. Learn to recognize the note
The best way to do this is to sing with the help of a piano or keyboard if you have one. Press a key and, when it plays, match your voice to that sound by producing an "ah". Do this for each musical note: C, C #, D, D #, Mi, Fa, Sol, G #, A, A #, Si.
Sharps (#) are the black keys on the piano, to the right of the corresponding note
Step 5. Practice chanting every day
The more you sing, the louder your voice will become. Although everyone has a certain vocal range, you can expand the upper and lower extremes of your vocal range by practicing often and practicing.
Method 2 of 2: Keep Your Voice Healthy
Step 1. Drink enough water
No matter how good you are at singing, you won't make a good sound if you're dehydrated. You should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.
Do not drink alcohol or caffeine before singing, as these are substances that dehydrate you
Step 2. Don't eat dairy or sweets before singing
Foods such as yogurt, cheese and ice cream cause excessive mucus to build up in the throat, making it difficult to sing.
Step 3. Don't smoke
Smoking damages your lungs and prevents you from breathing properly while singing. It also dries up the throat, which negatively affects the voice.
Step 4. Do breathing exercises often
Even if you don't have time to warm up or sing every day, you should take deep breaths through your belly every day. This simple exercise will improve your voice in the long run.
Step 5. Don't over-strain your voice
Trying to sing too loudly or too loudly can damage the vocal cords. If you start to feel a sore throat, if you feel pain, or if your voice starts to get hoarse, stop singing.
