InDesign is a very popular printing application software made by Adobe. It is often used by graphic designers to print books, magazines and brochures. In addition to important elements such as text, graphics and logos, page numbers are essential for these publications. Adding page numbers is possible during or after your document is written, if you know where to look. This article will tell you how to add page numbers in InDesign.
Steps
Step 1. Open your Adobe InDesign application, and then open your document
Step 2. Click on your "Pages" panel
When the "Pages" dialog box appears, you should see all the pages that make up your document.
Step 3. Click on the first master page which will have a number
The first page on your list could be the cover, which often doesn't have a number.
Step 4. Use the "Zoom" function to zoom in on the lower left corner of the first page you want to number
You can also zoom in on the lower right corner if you are using a right page as the first numbered page. Most people start numbering in the lower left corner.
Step 5. Click on the "Text" tool
It looks like a capital "T" on the left panel.
Step 6. Use the tool to create a box in the lower left corner where you want your first number to appear
You have to make a very large box. InDesign will automatically update the page numbers when you are done and requests that the box be large enough to hold the number 1999, even if your page numbers remain low
Step 7. Go to the "Test" menu in the upper horizontal panel
Step 8. Scroll to "Insert Special Character"
A menu will appear next to "Insert Special Character". Scroll to "Indicator". Unlike symbols, indicators can change depending on the length or other changes to the document. In the menu that appears to the right of "Indicators", choose "Current page number".
- The hot keys on Mac operating systems (OS) are "Command", "Shift", "Option" and the letter "N", to be pressed at the same time. You should use them if you will be using this command very often.
- The hotkeys on Windows operating systems are "Control," "Shift," "Alt" and the letter "N" to be pressed at the same time.
- Your first number will appear as an "A" with a number next to it because it is the master page. The other page numbers will appear as simple numbers.
Step 9. Click on the "Paragraph Style" panel to change the appearance of your page numbers to the visual style of your choice
When you change the style of the master page "A," it will change the style of all numbers.
Step 10. Use your "Text" tool to drag the box to the position you would like it to appear on your page, if it is not already positioned properly
Step 11. Duplicate the page number box by pressing "Options", then clicking on the box and dragging it to the right of the page on Mac OS, or by pressing "Alt", then clicking on the box and dragging it on Windows OS
It will save you time creating the numbers on the right side of the pages, instead of repeating the whole process again.
Step 12. Go to your "Pages" panel to check if the numbers have appeared on all your pages
Zoom in on the left and right corners. They should appear in order.
