Being a good kindergarten teacher requires a lot of patience and commitment. But in the end it is a job that will give you a lot of satisfaction and, perhaps, you will receive congratulations from your superior (and who knows, maybe even a raise).
Steps
Step 1. Make sure you are understanding with the children
Don't underestimate their abilities. They may say rude things to you: kindly tell them to stop.
Step 2. Obtain a certificate or recognition for infant teaching
Check what the laws of the country you live in require.
Step 3. Make sure you have prepared many activities for the children
For example, the first day you can teach them ABC, the second how to color, the third how to count 123. This way, you will be less pressured if you have no set tasks. Reading a book to the class could also be a good idea and a great pastime!
Step 4. Get regular sleep
If you go to class half asleep, some children may end up in trouble without you noticing. Sleeping well will make you more careful!
Step 5. Be very patient with the children
They may not understand what it means to be in school, as they will only be 4 or 5 years old. Teach them the basics of school with patience and kindness and, perhaps, ask them what they would like to become when they grow up: it will positively influence them to know that a good education is necessary.
Step 6. Bring a healthy lunch and make sure the kids do the same
If children do not eat healthily, they could risk obesity; younger children are the most at risk. If you eat healthy foods, like a salad or an apple, you will encourage them to do the same. You could also teach them a lesson on how healthy food helps them become healthy people.
Step 7. Enjoy
Having fun is essential in kindergarten, as it stimulates children to learn, showing them that school is not necessarily boring and annoying! A more fun lesson will make the child want to go to school!
Advice
- At the end of the lesson, don't leave. Say hello to the parents and make sure all the kids reach them safely.
- Teach them to go to the bathroom and hurry back so they don't miss a thing. If possible, arrange for an adult to accompany them.
- Work hard to learn the basic concepts of going to school.
- If possible, ask your supervisor for an assistant (usually, the school already has assistants for kindergarten teachers).
- Check that the children's hygiene education is also good: if they have to go to the bathroom, let them go, but make sure they don't spend too much time there!
- If you have babies crying in class (for example when their parents leave), comfort them and tell them that after school they will come home!
