Holes in the ceiling can be caused by various factors, including leaks, installation of lights or miscellaneous equipment, rearrangement of furniture, or simple accidents. It's hard not to notice when a ceiling has a hole in it. Most holes are small enough to fix with a simple patch. However even the largest holes can be accommodated with the proper equipment and organization. Repair a hole in the ceiling as soon as you notice it to prevent it from getting bigger and more unsightly.
Steps
Step 1. Prepare a container with putty
Many types of putty are pre-blended in disposable containers, and can simply be opened and used. On the market there are also plasterboard putties that must be mixed in a small cup that will then be thrown away.
Step 2. Remove the debris around the hole
Eliminate old or sagging paint and drywall flakes. If the hole was made by a screwdriver or some other tool used to hang something from the ceiling, make sure all accessories have been removed from the area, even from inside the hole.
Step 3. Thoroughly clean the area around the hole with a toothbrush or small brush to remove any remaining dust
If the hole is larger than an inch, use a sticky net. Rub the area around the hole and apply the tape in strips at least 2.5cm long past the hole before preparing the area for grout
Step 4. Wet a soft sponge and moisten the hole, scrubbing gently
The hole must be moist without dripping. This way the grout will easily stick to the hole and stay fixed.
Step 5. Patch the hole with putty
Use a putty knife to press the putty firmly in and around the hole. Smooth the grout well around and over the hole. The grouted area should be at least twice the size of the hole. Continue applying the putty until you have formed a flat surface in line with the ceiling.
Step 6. Allow the grout to dry completely
Leave the area open and without touching it overnight so that it dries completely.
Step 7. Sand the area
Rub sandpaper several times over the grouted area, applying light pressure until the area is completely smooth and level.
