Have you adopted a dog that was abused or abandoned by its previous owner? Now you have to take care of it and take care of it to get it back to health. With a little love, a little soap and a good vet, your dog will start living a happy and healthy life, thanks to you.
Steps
Step 1. Get advice from whoever had the dog before, so you know what you should or shouldn't do
If you have found it and you do not know the owner, follow the instructions in this article, but not before giving it food and nutrients and contacting the association for the adoption of dogs or the kennel in your area to inform them of your foundling.. If the dog is not claimed within a week, keep it with you and take care of it yourself.
Step 2. Get him for a medical check-up
First take him to a vet. If the dog seems fairly healthy to you, the vet will give him the rabies vaccine. Never allow your doctor to give you one vaccine if you are sick or give you several at once. The vet will also examine the dog, check for parasites and give him medication if needed. He will also be able to check for infections, old wounds, as well as check the condition of his teeth. After the visit you will be able to understand if it is safe to undertake the commitment to look after him.
Step 3. Eliminate any parasites
If the dog is very nervous or even slightly aggressive, get a muzzle. Then, brush or comb the pet's fur to remove any parasites, preferably outdoors. If your vet has given him a topical treatment such as Frontline, do not bathe him for at least 48 hours. To get rid of ticks, get the following materials: denatured alcohol, tweezers, and some paper towels. Keep the puppy in a crouch and rub alcohol on the ticks, then start ripping off those nasty parasites. Make sure you remove the tick's entire head, otherwise it may still survive. If the bites start to bleed, apply pressure with a paper towel. The bleeding will stop in no time. Your dog may whine or fidget if you harm him, so calm him down by talking to him in a low voice and stroking him.
Step 4. Brush the dog
Shave too much matted fur at your discretion, usually less painful than combing it, but keep in mind that it may get a little irritated by the sudden loss of fur. stay calm because it will grow quite quickly again. Alternatively, carefully use scissors to cut along the tangled area and gently pick up the hair on one side with a comb. Small, long-haired breeds, such as Yorkshire Terriers, Shih Tzus, Bearded Collies, Setters and husky-type dogs, benefit from shearing the anal and genital area. If you don't know how to do it yourself, take your dog to a professional grooming center.
Step 5. Feed him
An abandoned dog is almost always a hungry dog. When you take your pet to the vet, ask him what kind of diet you should set. This is because if the dog has a swollen belly and you overcharge him, you could damage his intestines and kill him. A hungry animal is capable of devouring a full bucket of food in minutes, so give it only small amounts every few hours. Make sure you also give him fresh water.
Step 6. Let it rest
After such a busy day for him: a change of environment, a trip to the vet, physical care and a good meal, allow him to rest and catch up on some sleep. Humans need sleep to regain energy and stay fit, dogs are no different. Provide him with a soft blanket in a quiet corner and leave him alone to rest.
Step 7. Give him some love
It has just been abandoned, seeking loving attention and responsible care. Make him feel loved and let him know that you will take care of his future needs.
Step 8. Play with him
The dog likes to play with his owner. He also likes it when you scratch him a little (not too hard!) It's like you're telling him he's safe with you and he'll grow closer to you. Make it feel right at home.
Advice
- If you already have a dog, make sure he doesn't come into contact with the one you adopted until he has all his vaccinations and his behavior has stabilized.
- If the dog is very shy because his old family beat him, try to approach slowly and show him some sympathy. Try luring it in with a treat and try to slowly approach it until you can gently stroke it. Be patient, the dog probably won't want physical affection right away.
- If he gets a thorn in his paw or is stung by a bee, the dog will surely whine and / or wail. Try using tweezers to remove the bee's sting from the body or the thorn from the dog's paw.
Warnings
- Do not indulge or pamper your dog excessively. Expect him to be quite nervous, at least at first. Be a calm but assertive guide for him. Give it time to settle into your home.
- A stray dog cannot be trained to live indoors. Do not punish him if he urinates in the house, as this could further worsen his already nervous mood. Observe the dog's habits and take him out every few hours, thus giving him enough time to sniff around, get to know the area and therefore his needs as well.
- A stray dog can have rabies. Don't get too close until he's been vaccinated.
- Don't give him too many amounts of food. If you need to feed him before consulting your vet, offer him only a small amount of top brand puppy food 3-4 times a day - for example, a medium-sized dog should eat about 1/2 - 3/4 cup of kibble. for puppies and a spoonful of wet food 3-4 times a day to start.
- A stray dog may actually be someone's lost pet. Hang up posters and post ads in the newspaper. Ask your vet to check the microchip (if it has one).
- Keep children away from the animal until it has been at least a week since you adopted it. By that time you should know his medical condition and his temperament.
- Use extreme caution. A frightened dog is often aggressive.
- Do not feed it with any cheese or pork products (ham, bacon, etc.), onions, animal bones, grapes, garlic, chocolate, sushi, apple cores or corn on the cob. These foods could lead to illness, diarrhea, choking and / or death.
