Smokey lips are a new trend in the makeup world that is layering a translucent black lipstick over a matte lipstick. The result? An intense but nuanced effect. Some people do this makeup differently, as they create a shaded effect that is reminiscent of smokey eye makeup. This article explains how to do both!
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Doing a Classic Smokey Lip Makeup
Step 1. Get a colored matte lipstick and a translucent black lipstick
To achieve this effect, you need to layer the black lipstick on the matte one. The thick black layer also features an iridescent effect. Some brands, such as Lipstick Queen, sell kits that include a nude and a black, translucent, pearly lipstick. You can use this kit or choose lipsticks directly from your own make-up collection.
- Matte lipstick can be any color. Red and purple are perfect, but a pinkish nude can also be used.
- Black lipstick should be translucent and preferably have an iridescent effect.
Step 2. Apply the base lipstick
You can apply it directly from the tube or use a special brush. Keep in mind that black lipstick will darken it by various tones. It is not necessary to remove excess with a tissue, but you can dab your lips between them to make the product more evenly distributed. Leaving excess product on your lips is actually a good idea, as this helps make it blend better with the black lipstick.
Step 3. Apply the black lipstick on top
Remember that it must be translucent, otherwise the final color will be too dark. It is best to apply it directly from the tube. This will give you more control over the drafting.
Step 4. Examine the color and then layer it if desired
Since this is a gradient effect makeup, the black lipstick will not be intense. However, a single layer may appear too light. Add a layer or two of black lipstick to get a darker tone.
Step 5. Make adjustments if necessary
Use a lipstick brush to blend the products and perfect the smokey effect. Take a good look at the contour of the lips, especially the corners. Use a lipstick brush to remedy if you notice any irregularities. When you are satisfied with the final result, you will be ready to go out.
Method 2 of 2: Doing a Smokey Makeup for Shaded Lips
Step 1. Apply the base lipstick
Choose a bright red to create a classic look. This make-up is different from the previous one because it has more shading and evokes the smokey eye make-up.
Try a different color, like purple or bright pink, to be daring with other looks
Step 2. Touch up the corners and edges with a lipstick brush
Use an angled brush to even out the base, especially around the contour area and corners of the lips. You don't need to use a lip pencil for this trick, but it must still be as precise and defined as possible.
Don't clean the brush yet. You will need the lipstick residue left on the bristles to make the final shade
Step 3. Define the corners with a black eye pencil
Start from the outer corner of the lips and work towards the center, advancing about ¼ or 1/3. Don't worry if the effect looks weird at first - remember you'll have to blend it out.
- You can also use a black lip liner if you can find it.
- If your base lipstick is a lighter color, such as purple or bright pink, use a darker shade of the same color, such as plum (for purple) or garnet red (for pink).
Step 4. Blend the eye pencil using the lipstick brush
Gently pass the brush over your lips. Start from the outer corner and work your way to the center. Use the widest part of the brush on the surface of the lips and the narrowest part on the contour.
Step 5. Continue blending until you get an even color gradation
The lips should be darker at the corners and brighter towards the center. This way you will get a nuanced and sensual effect, perfect for the evening.
Step 6. Add a veil of lip gloss to the center of the lips if desired
This makeup highlights the lips on its own, but you can intensify it even more by dabbing a veil of lip gloss in the center of the upper and lower lip.
Advice
- After applying the lipstick, stick a finger in your mouth and pull it out. This not only helps eliminate excess product, it also prevents the lipstick from getting on the teeth!
- Put a tissue over your lips and dust with setting powder to make the lipstick last longer.
- Do you have dry lips? Exfoliate before applying makeup. Apply lip balm, then exfoliate them with a clean brush or toothbrush. You can also use a simple sugar and honey scrub (or oil).
- Before makeup, completely cover your lips with a concealer, then define them by going slightly beyond the natural contour to make them appear more plump. This way you can also get a sharper outline and better enhance the color. It is also a useful technique for correcting errors.
