Big, voluminous curls are the symbol of sensual hair and are perfect for those days when you want to give your look an extra edge. Fortunately, they're not too difficult to obtain, and there are many ways to do this. Try one of these four methods and you'll have beautiful full curls in no time.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Using a curling iron
Step 1. Heat your curling iron
Turn on the iron and set it to a temperature that is equivalent to the thickness of your hair (the thicker it is, the higher the temperature should be). For large curls, use an iron about 2 1/2 inches wide; the wider the iron, the wider your curls will be. Let the iron heat up for about 2-3 minutes before you start curling them.
Step 2. Prepare your hair
The hair must be completely dry before being curled with an iron, in this regard, use a blow dryer to dry it if necessary. Apply a spray or mousse that protects your hair from burning and makes it shiny instead. If you wish, you can also apply a product to define curls to help create large, voluminous curls with the iron.
Step 3. Separate the hair into sections
Curling your hair takes time and you will get a better result if you work on single sections. Gather ⅔ of the top of your hair into a ponytail and let the bottom layer loose. Comb your hair to remove knots so that it is ready to be curled.
Step 4. Start curling them
Take about 2 1/2 cm sections of hair and roll them around the iron, starting from the center (rather than the end) of each section. Hold the hair around the iron for 5-10 seconds, and then let it go. Repeat this process for the entire bottom layer of your hair.
Step 5. Curl other sections of your hair
Dissolve half of the hair in the ponytail, and comb it to prepare it to be curled. Follow the instructions already indicated, wrap sections of hair about 2 cm and a half around the iron starting from the center of the lock until you have curled the whole layer. Finish with the top layer when the middle section is completed.
Step 6. Define the hairstyle
Set your hairdryer to the "cold" option and use it on your hair. The temperature of your hair will return to normal, helping the curls to last longer. Finally, turn your hair upside down and apply the hairspray. Return to normal position and adjust them however you like. Done!
Method 2 of 4: Using thermal curlers
Step 1. Heat your curlers
Make sure they are placed in their box, then plug them in to warm them up. Some have a light on the outside that warns you when they are fully heated; otherwise, wait 5-10 minutes for them to warm up before putting them in your hair.
Step 2. Prepare your hair
While you wait for the curlers to heat up, make sure your hair is ready to be curled. Just like with a curling iron, your hair must be super dry to use curlers. Use a blow dryer to remove moisture, and brush your hair to loosen any knots. To add volume you can use a little mousse before drying your hair.
Step 3. Start rolling your hair
Starting with the hair above the forehead, take strands of 5-7 cm. Roll each of these strands around your hair, leaving 2 to 5 cm of tips free as you roll them. When the curler reaches your skin, tuck the tip of the lock underneath to make sure it stays still. Tighten the curler wrap on top of this and move on to the next strand.
Step 4. Roll the rest of your hair around the rollers
Working from top to bottom, separate your hair into sections of 5 - 7 cm and continue to roll them following the steps already indicated. If your hair is particularly thick, you may need to make smaller strands. Tighten each curler until you are done with all the strands
Step 5. Wait
Curlers take some time to curl your hair, so sit back and relax for about 20-30 minutes until it cools. During this time, you can finish preparing or doing other things while you wait.
Step 6. Remove the curlers
One by one, starting from top to bottom, first remove the beaks and then the curlers themselves. Avoid undoing your curls a lot, as they may lose their elasticity and volume. Continue until you have removed all curlers.
Step 7. Finish the look
Before touching the curls, fix them with some hairspray to make them stay in place. Then, using only your fingers (not a comb), comb your hair to separate the curls and make them look more natural. If necessary, you can give a final touch of lacquer, and you are done!
Method 3 of 4: Using socks
Step 1. Gather what you need
To curl your hair with socks, you will need 3 or 4 clean socks, a brush and a sprayer filled with water.
Step 2. Part your hair into sections
Remove all the knots, and separate them into 3 or 4 large strands equivalent to the number of socks you have available. If you have three socks, make one strand on top of your head and two more of the same on the sides. If you have four socks, create two strands at the top of the head and two at the sides. To keep the locks separate from each other, you can use hair clips or make tails.
Step 3. Roll up a section using the sock
Roll your hair around the center of the sock, as if you were rolling it around curlers. Leave the ends of the hair out of the sock until you have reached the skin, and then tuck them under the curler you created. Use the ends of the sock to tie a knot to secure the curler.
Step 4. Continue to roll the strands around the other socks
Use the steps listed above for the remaining strands. Attach them as close to your skin as possible to prevent them from melting while you sleep.
Step 5. Moisten your hair
Use a water sprayer to lightly wet your hair. This will allow you to create the curls in a better way, as they will dry directly into the spiral shape around the sock. Don't make your hair soggy, just dampen it slightly.
Step 6. Wait for your hair to be ready
This method is best suited to be practiced at night. You can make curlers before bed, and then sleep on them to get big, voluminous curls the next morning. If you don't want to sleep in your socks, you'll have to wait about 5-6 hours for them to be ready.
Step 7. Remove the socks from your hair
Starting from the bottom up, let your hair down by removing the socks. Don't comb them with your fingers or anything else for now, just untie them from your socks.
Step 8. Finish the look
Your hair should now be voluminous and bouncy curls. Lightly moisten them with hairspray to set them, and then comb them with your fingers to separate them and give them volume. Once that's done, you're done!
Method 4 of 4: Using Bantu knots
Step 1. Prepare your hair
Bantu knots are tiny buns scattered all over your head. For this it is necessary that your hair is free of knots and completely straight. Comb them, and then lightly moisten them with water through a sprayer.
Step 2. Divide your hair into sections
Depending on the thickness of your hair, you will need to vary the number of strands you create. The sections should be about 5 - 7 cm and you will need to separate them with clothespins or by tying them. These must cover your head on a regular basis.
Step 3. Create a Bantu node
Take a strand of hair and twist it several times as if to create a cord with a spiral shape. Next, roll the section around itself to create a small bun on your skin. Use a bobby pin or two to pin the ends of your hair to the scalp, immobilizing the bun.
Step 4. Continue creating Bantu knots
Work by weaving each strand as if to create a rope, make a bun with this and then secure it with a bobby pin. The end result will turn out a little quirky, as you'll have about a dozen buns scattered around your head.
Step 5. Wait until the curls are ready
Being a method that does not involve the use of heat, Bantu knots take some time. Consequently, it is best to do this at night thus allowing your hair to curl while you sleep, so that the next morning you will wake up with the curls you craved. Alternatively, expect to have to wait 5-6 hours to get the curls.
Step 6. Untie all knots
Work bottom up and undo each bun. Remove the bobby pins and allow the spiral to free, but remember not to comb them as this will make it harder to untie the other knots. Continue the process until you are done.
Step 7. Finish the look
When your hair is down, you can use either your fingers or a wide-toothed comb to comb it. The more you comb them, the more they will acquire volume. Finish the look with some hairspray to secure them, and use some bobby pins if you like.
