Strolling through rows and rows of beautiful roses in the local nursery is a feast for the eyes and a joy for the soul… until you find the courage to look at the prices. The more frightening image of your bank account is superimposed on the idyllic image of your garden in bloom. Don't be discouraged. You can have your own rose plant for free. If you have the patience to wait for it to grow, you can fill that empty space in your garden by using stems cut from the rose plants you already own. Read below how to do it.
Steps
Step 1. Prepare the pot or area in your garden where you have decided to plant the cutting
If you are using a pot, fill half of it with soil and moisten it with water. If you plant in the ground, dig a hole, fill it with potting soil (for added nutrients) and wet.
Step 2. Cut the cutting from which the new plant will grow from the rose plant
It can be a whole branch or even just a stem.
With a knife, scrape the first 4-5 cm of the external part of the cut stem, in order to allow the rooting hormone to penetrate into the stem
Step 3. Wet the freshly scraped area and soak it in rooting hormone
Shake to remove excess liquid.
Step 4. Plant your cutting immediately
Hopefully, it should root within a week!
Advice
- Always keep the soil moist.
- This technique can also be used for trees!
- Not all cuttings are able to root. Despite your efforts, sometimes they happen to die. Take care of it and you will see the results.
- Don't cut your cutting until you are ready to plant it. The severed stem dries quickly in the air.
