By mounting a corner shower shelf you will get a space where you can store your soap and shampoo bottles without having to store them on the floor or on the edge of the tub. Different steps are listed below depending on the type of shower enclosure and shelves you have.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Using Silicone
You can easily glue a ceramic shelf into the corner of a tiled shower, using silicone and double-sided foam tape.
Step 1. Purchase a flat-backed ceramic corner shelf at a DIY store
Step 2. Before fixing the shelf, clean the set corner with detergent to remove the soap residue, then dry thoroughly
If there are any traces of soap or moisture left, you may not be able to secure the shelf.
Step 3. Apply double-sided foam tape to the mounting flanges on the sides of the shelf
Step 4. Test the shelf placement before removing the double-sided plastic strip
If the shelf doesn't line up with the corner, apply another layer of masking tape to one side until it fits snugly against the wall.
Step 5. Apply a thick layer of silicone along the sides of the shelf, using a tube or gun
The layer does not have to be homogeneous.
Step 6. Remove the backing from the double sided tape
Step 7. Place the shelf on the wall, in the center of a row of tiles, making sure that no horizontal joints cross the silicone layer
Press down on the shelf until the tape grips the wall.
Step 8. Run your fingertips over the hairline to smooth the silicone
Use a damp sponge to wipe off any residue.
Step 9. Allow the silicone to dry for 24 to 48 hours before using the shower again
Method 2 of 3: Using the Tools
Assembly of glass shelves usually requires the use of a tool kit. You can assemble this type of shelf using a couple of simple tools.
Step 1. Wash the shower wall with detergent to remove residue and dry thoroughly
Step 2. Choose where to mount your corner shelf and hold it against the tiles
With a pencil mark where the screws will go through the tiles and with a spirit level make sure the shelf is straight.
Step 3. Apply two layers of masking tape to the pencil marks
When you use the drill on the tiles, the masking tape will make it more stable.
Step 4. Apply a wall bit to the drill and slowly drill a hole through the tape into the tile
Be gentle so you don't break it.
Step 5. Repeat this until all holes have been created
Step 6. Remove the masking tape
Step 7. Insert expansion anchors into the holes
Step 8. With a screwdriver screw the shelf to the wall, inserting the screws into the anchors
Method 3 of 3: Mount a shelf in a fiberglass shower, using tools
Fiberglass shower enclosures are not strong enough to allow for fixing shelves, so you will need to use butterfly anchors. If there are pipes behind the shower frame, make sure you apply little pressure when using the drill.
Step 1. Clean and dry thoroughly to remove soap residue and moisture
Step 2. Place the shelf against the wall and make marks with the pencil in correspondence with the holes you are going to make with the drill
Use the spirit level to make sure the shelf is straight.
Step 3. Put a wood bit in the drill and drill holes of about 4 millimeters in the fiberglass
If you touch the plywood while drilling then insert some stainless steel screws, otherwise continue drilling to create holes of about 10 millimeters.
Step 4. Insert butterfly anchors about 3 millimeters into the holes created
Step 5. Apply a silicone strip to the back of the shelf, at the height of the screws, this will reinforce the fixing of the uprights
Step 6. Secure the shelf approximately 25mm from the wall and insert the screws into the holes with a screwdriver
Do not push the shelf to the wall without first tightening the screws firmly to the anchors, or the anchors will turn freely.
