A golden rectangle is a rectangle with sides of proportionate lengths according to the golden ratio (approximately 1: 1.618). This article also explains how to draw a square, necessary for the creation of a golden rectangle.
Steps
Step 1. Draw a square
We call the vertices A, B, C and D.
Step 2. Find the center of one side of the square by dividing it in two with a compass
We choose the side AB and call the center point P.
Step 3. Connect point P to a corner of the opposite side
Since P is on the AB side, the opposite side will be CD. We choose to connect P with C.
Step 4. Point the compass at P and set the opening to the length PC
Draw a large arc towards the BC side.
Step 5. Extend side AB to intersect the arc at some point (Q)
Step 6. Draw a line parallel to the BC side, passing through Q
Step 7. Extend the DC side to intersect the parallel line at some point (R)
Step 8. Congratulations
You just drew a Golden Rectangle AQRD. Delete any unnecessary lines if you want.

You can verify that the proportion of the length of the short side of the rectangle (QR or AD) to the long side (AQ or RD) is very close to 1: 1.618.
