Sooner or later everyone's teeth turn yellow. As the enamel wears out, the underlying dentin layer, which is yellowish, is exposed. Some whitening products can affect tooth sensitivity and remove enamel, so try some less abrasive methods before trying a chemical solution.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Clean Yellowed Teeth
Step 1. Buy a rotating / oscillating toothbrush and use it instead of the regular one
It has been shown to significantly reduce stains, more effectively than a manual toothbrush. However, don't brush your teeth more than 3 times a day, as this can be abrasive to the enamel.
Step 2. Book a dental cleaning
Dentists use abrasives, metal tools and cleaning paste or air-polishing powder to remove stains. In some cases, the teeth turn yellow or brown due to tartar, which can be thoroughly removed with a simple cleaning and removal ad hoc.
Doctors suggest cleaning every 6 months to remove stains, protect teeth and gums
Step 3. Limit your consumption of drinks that stain your teeth
The main culprits are coffee, tea, juices, soft drinks and sports drinks. If you really have to drink them, use a straw.
- If you continue to drink them every day, rinse your mouth with water or brush your teeth about 10 minutes after consumption, otherwise they will counteract all the work you are doing to whiten them.
- Also, avoid smoking, as it can cause permanent stains.
Step 4. Make an all-natural cleansing and whitening paste with baking soda
Mix 2 teaspoons of baking soda with enough water to form a paste. Pick it up with a manual toothbrush and pass it in a circular motion over all surfaces of the teeth, including the internal ones.
- Pick up the paste several times during the process.
- Repeat this process at least once a week or up to 3 times a week, but no more than 4 weeks in a row. If you suffer from enamel hypoplasia, consider that it is best avoided, so consult your dentist before trying this home treatment.
- For greater whitening effectiveness, you can also replace the water with lemon juice. Then rinse your mouth to remove residual acidic substances, which can cause tooth sensitivity.
Method 2 of 2: Try a Chemical Treatment
Step 1. Rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide several times a week
Hydrogen peroxide is a mild bleaching agent and is usually found in home first aid kits. Shake it in your mouth for at least 30 seconds.
- Make sure you don't swallow it and don't give it to children.
- This treatment is effective for blemishes and also fights bacterial overgrowth, but you shouldn't do it for more than 4 weeks in a row.
Step 2. Buy whitening toothpaste
If you have problems with tooth or gum sensitivity, buy a specific one. Use it for 6 weeks.
Prolonged use of whitening toothpaste can erode tooth enamel, exposing dentin and increasing the risk of colored foods staining your teeth faster than before
Step 3. Try homemade whitening strips
Apply them to your teeth for at least a week. The results can last up to a year.
Step 4. Invest in a whitening kit containing carbamide peroxide
The costs can be around € 30-200, but it is such an effective treatment that it can even lighten the natural color of the teeth, as well as remove stains.
Avoid using too many whitening kits, as prolonged use can damage tooth enamel. Also, before starting treatment, consult a dentist
Step 5. Book a whitening
This treatment is usually performed over several appointments and can cost up to 700 euros. It allows you to eliminate stains and whiten teeth in various tones.
