Cognac is a brandy that is produced around the French city of the same name. It is the product of a double distillation of white wine with an alcohol content of about 40%. Cognacs are famous for their body and rich aroma, and are considered post-meal drinks. To learn how to fully enjoy them, follow these tips.
Steps
Step 1. Choose the cognac you want to drink
The subdivision is made according to the degree of ripeness.
- Choose a Very Special (VS) cognac. This is the youngest cognac, matured at least two years.
- Try a Very Special Old Pale (VSOP). In this case the cognac has rested for at least 4 years.
- Buy Extra Old (XO) Cognac. It is the highest degree of maturation, at least 6 years. There are some special reserves of XO cognac that have been left to mature for up to 20 years.
Step 2. Choose the glass
The tulip one is universally recognized as the best for tasting and is the favorite of connoisseurs. However, a low, spherical glass is also acceptable.
Step 3. Pour about 25ml of cognac into the glass
Step 4. Let it warm in your hands
Hold the glass in your hand for about 10 minutes. Support it from below to help the distillate reach a temperature of about 20 ° C
Step 5. Look at the color of the cognac
The color and its reflections are indicative of the stage of ripeness.
- A straw yellow indicates a young cognac.
- If it is golden, amber, or a coppery hue, it is an older cognac.
Step 6. Smell it
Put your nose near the edge of the glass and inhale the aroma, which is also called "first nose". According to the type of cognac, the scent varies from floral to fruity. The floral notes are of violet or pink, while the fruity ones are of grape or plum.
Step 7. Gently swirl the cognac in the glass
In this way you release the different aromas.
Step 8. Smell the distillate again
You should now be able to perceive different scents thanks to the oxygenation process generated by the rotation.
Step 9. Take a small sip
This way you will be able to distinguish all the flavors this wonderful product has to offer. Let it flow on the palate to savor its complexity.
