It's very easy to build a Minecraft book, but finding the ingredients you need can be challenging. Once you've found all the right materials though, it's easy to create a farmhouse so you never run out of paper and leather. Read on and start building your library right away.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Minecraft for PC or Console
Step 1. Collect some sugar cane
It is a green shrub that you can find near bodies of water. In some worlds it is rare, but following a coast you should find it. Break it with your bare hands or with any tool to collect it.
Sugar cane does not grow near frozen water. Look for it in the hottest biomes
Step 2. Create a sugar cane farm (recommended)
Since finding this plant is not easy, don't turn all you have into paper. By placing one on the ground you can plant it wherever you like, but it will only grow under the following conditions:
- It must be planted on earth, sand, grass or podsol.
- It must be adjacent to at least one block of water.
- Note: To harvest the cane, wait for it to grow and cut the tallest blocks. If you leave the lower block, it will continue to grow.
Step 3. Turn three sugar canes into paper
Fill one row of the workbench with the plant. This way you can get three sheets of paper, enough to build a book.
Step 4. Look for some leather
Cows are usually easy to find, while horses only inhabit the plains or savannas. Each animal of these species you kill will drop 0-2 pieces of leather. You will need one for each book.
- You can also make leather with four rabbit furs or you can rarely find it by fishing.
- If you want a stable source of leather, grow grain and use it to lure cows into a pen. When your herd starts to run out of stock, you can feed a couple of cows some grain to breed.
Step 5. Combine paper and leather to make a book
Place one leather unit and three paper units anywhere on the workbench. You will get a book.
Method 2 of 3: Minecraft Pocket Edition
Step 1. Check the version of Minecraft you have
These instructions are valid for version 0.12.1 or later. If you are playing an older version, please consider the following changes:
- Before version 0.12.1, the books did not require leather, but they did not have a purpose within the game.
- Before version 0.3.0, books did not exist.
Step 2. Look for sugar cane
It is a green shrub that you can find near bodies of water. You can pick it up with your bare hands. When you have found some, you can plant a few at your base, so that you have a permanent supply of paper. Look for it in the sand and on the land by the water.
If you don't have enough sugar cane to make all the paper you need, you can grow them faster with bone meal
Step 3. Turn three sugar canes into paper
Press on your workbench and select the Paper recipe in the Decorations menu. This recipe allows you to turn three sugar canes into three sheets of paper.
Step 4. Kill some cows to get leather
Each animal will drop 0-2 pieces of leather. If your version is 0.11 or later, you can also find leather thanks to fishing, but the probability is much lower.
Step 5. Combine paper and leather to make a book
The book is another item that you can find in the Decorations section of the workbench menu.
Method 3 of 3: Build Other Objects with Books
Step 1. Combine the books with wooden planks to create bookshelves
Combine six boards (top and bottom row) with three books (middle row) to make a bookcase. Many players make these blocks just for their aesthetic appearance, but they are also very useful for improving your spells.
Step 2. Build a spell table
You need four obsidian blocks (bottom row and middle square), two diamonds (right and left squares of the middle one) and a book (middle square at the top). A spell table allows you to spend experience points to grant special abilities to your weapons, armor and tools.
To get obsidian, divert water onto lava. You need a diamond pickaxe to dig it
Step 3. Build a book and pen
Put a book, an ink pouch and a feather on the crafting table to get the book and pen. Using this object opens an interface where you can type a long message.
- This recipe is not available in the Pocket Edition of the game and older console versions.
- To get feathers, kill chickens. To get the ink bags, kill the octopuses.
Advice
- You can find the books in the chests of the fortresses and in the libraries of the villages and fortresses.
- You can enchant a book to hold an upgrade. Using an anvil, you can join the book and another object to transfer the spell. This is a great way to get a single item with multiple beneficial spells.
