This article explains how to use speech recognition on a computer for the purpose of writing a document in Microsoft Word.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Windows
Step 1. Press the ⊞ Win + S keys to open the search box
Step 2. Type voice recognition
A list of relevant results will appear.
This option may be called "voice dialing" on some systems. In any case, the functionality will be the same
Step 3. Click on Speech Recognition
This will open the control panel dedicated to this feature.
Step 4. Click on Start Speech Recognition
If you've already set this up, the speech recognition panel will appear at the top of the screen. This means that everything is ready to start.
If this is your first time using speech recognition, you will need to click on Come on to carry out the configuration process. Follow the onscreen instructions for the computer to "learn" to recognize your voice. Once the procedure is complete, the voice recognition panel will appear.
Step 5. Click on the microphone symbol
It is located on the voice recognition panel. At this point you can start dictating.
Step 6. Open Word
This program is found in the Windows menu, under the section titled "Microsoft Office".
Step 7. Click where you want to insert the text
Step 8. Start talking
As you speak, the words will appear on the screen.
Method 2 of 2: macOS
Step 1. Click on the Apple menu
It is located in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 2. Click on System Preferences
Step 3. Click on Keyboard
Step 4. Click Dictation
It is one of the tabs located at the top of the window.
Step 5. Activate the button next to the "Dictation" option
By clicking on this circular button, it will turn blue and a white dot will appear in the center.
Step 6. Check the box next to "Use Enhanced Dictation"
This will allow you to use offline functionality and continuous dictation with real-time feedback.
Step 7. Click on the red circular button to close the "Keyboard" window
Step 8. Press the Fn key twice
At this point, a window will open with a microphone symbol. The dictation functionality will then be active and ready to be used. This is the window dedicated to dictation operations.
Step 9. Open Word
It is usually found in the folder Applications or on the Launchpad.
Step 10. Click on the document in which you want the text to appear
Step 11. Start talking
As you dictate, the words will appear in the Word document.
